AEW Dynamite was a special 2.5-hour Grand Slam Mexico edition. For such a special event featuring stars from CMLL, the card booking was atrocious. None of these matches had a positive outcome for anyone involved. Here are the three main strikes on the event that should have been sent back to the dugout.
AEW Dynamite Grand Slam Mexico Strike One
The opening match of the evening was a fourteen-man tag team match. There has never been, nor will there ever be, a reason to book a fourteen-man tag match. Some great talent was lost in chaos, causing everyone to look choppy, constantly looking for room. There were too many cheesy, matching, choreographed spots, cheapening the product. A match with that many people is never going to tell a great story. Adam Cole, Daniel Garcia, Brody King, Templario, Bandido, Atlantis & Atlantis Jr. defeated Kyle Fletcher, Konosuke Takeshita, Josh Alexander, Lance Archer, Volador Jr., Hechicero & Dax Harwood when Atlantis pinned Harwood.
AEW Dynamite Grand Slam Mexico Strike Two
Strike two was Mercedes Mone challenging Zeuxis for the CMLL Women’s Championship. She really is ruining women’s wrestling for the talent and for the fans. The match was nothing special, with the luchadora clearly the stronger of the two, but neither appeared overly athletic. It’s a given that Mone will flex her creative control and never lose; it’s worse than the Hogan era. The CEO is the new champ, along with the five other titles she carries around. Anything to do with Mone is pointless now. She is unathletic, uncharismatic, and too full of herself to realize she’s chosen for most of these titles because they can book her as ex-WWE, but she would never give her former employer any credit.
AEW Dynamite Grand Slam Mexico Strike Three
Strike one was the opening match featuring fourteen stars, followed by strike two, another championship to hang off of Mone. Strike three, another multi-man tag in the main event. This time, a 10-man tag match. There’s no explaining the first and last matches of a special episode being double-digit tag matches. While better than the opening match, it’s still unworthy of a main event. There are other ways to set up your upcoming PPV than throwing all the people involved in the story in a couple of tag matches. Jon Moxley, Wheeler Yuta, The Beast Mortos & The Young Bucks defeated Will Ospreay, Swerve Strickland, Samoa Joe, Katsuyori Shibata & Powerhouse Hobbs when Moxley pinned Strickland.
