AEW Tag Tournament
This week marked the beginning of a tag team tournament to crown new number one contenders. The first match was FTR versus JetSpeed. The two teams have been building amazing chemistry as of late, and the trend continued here. Great pace and reversals throughout. They also had entertaining high spots while keeping the match physical. FTR would win one of the better matches in recent history. Cope appeared at the top of the entrance ramp, and having a stipulation to not touch FTR, hired The Hurt Business to go lay the beat down. A brawl ensued, resulting in FTR rolling around on the ground.
Ospreay Injury Update
The next segment featured Will Ospreay being interviewed in the ring. He updated viewers of an ongoing neck issue that he’s been hiding from management. An emotional Ospreay announced two herniated disks that are in his spinal cord. It seems fixable via surgery, and he aims to return at Forbidden Door in late August. He’s not only one of the best to ever do it, he genuinely loves the fans, and seems sad about disappointing them.
AEW Women’s World Title
The following match saw Billie Starkz taking on the Women’s World Champion, Toni Storm, in hopes of softening her up before the title match against her friend, Athena. The match turned out better than expected, but, of course, the champ was victorious. After the match, Starks took Storm out using her title and then threw the referee to the floor. Previously watching along, fans, she ran down and inflicted heavy damage. The number one contender for Athena’s ROH Women’s World Championship, Alex Windsor, attacked her upcoming opponent to end the segment.
Wrapping Up Dynamite
Swerve Strickland versus Hechicero was next. The Don Callis Family ruined the match by attacking Swerve, but Bandito and Brody King saved the day. Everything seemed fine for Swerve, but Okada came to give him further trouble.
Claudio Castinholi versus Mark Briscoe was the next match. This was a physical match with both men getting their licks in. It was nice to see them give Briscoe the main event victory. After the match, Adam Page awarded Mox a title shot next week.
