Willow Nightingale after beating Mercedes Mone for the TBS Championship at AEW Dynamite New Year's Smash
AEW Dyamite: New Year’s Smash results are in. The new heavyweight champ was on the mic, while a surprising new champion was also crowned on the show.
World Title Picture
The show opened up with the winner of the four-way match for AEW’s top championship, MJF, coming to the ring to celebrate/cut a promo. After reintroducing the BBB, he was interrupted by Kenny Omega on the Jumbotron.
MJF called Omega a coward for not coming to the ring when he was interrupted again. This time, by “Hangman” Adam Page and Swerve Strickland. They were quickly dismissed by the champ as losers, and left them to take it out on the ringside officials.
The interruptions continued as Samoa Joe and The Opps hit the Jumbotron. The result was a Lights Out Street Fight challenge laid out by Hangman. It was announced later in the night that this would take place on next week’s Dynamite.
AEW Dynamite: New Year’s Smash Results – Opening Matchups
The first match of the evening was a mixed-trios toronado tag match. Orange Cassidy, Roderick Strong, and “Timeless” Toni Storm teamed up to take on The Deathriders. It was chaotic, but certainly felt like filler. Claudio Castignolli and Strong stood out for their physicality.
The next match featured Bandido and The Beast Mortos in singles action. Mortos and Sami Guevara have been targeting luchadores lately, so the ROH World Champion was looking for redemption. This one had the highspots you would expect, along with the physicality to keep it legitimate. Bandido pulled out the victory for luchadores worldwide.
Brody King versus Lee Moriorty was the next contest. King dominated this squash match.
New Year’s Smash Results: More Championship Pictures
The next match was a big opportunity for Josh Alexander. If he could beat the AEW Continental Champion in a non-title match, he’d be rewarded with a title shot. It was a good back-and-forth affair with both men working stiff. The announce team repeatedly mentioned that a time-limit draw is just as good for Alexander; however, he was submitted with less than five minutes remaining.
“Jungle” Jack Perry challenged Ricochet for the AEW National Championship. This was a match with entertaining high spots while still bringing intensity. Ricochet retained with the help of outside interference from GOA. The trio then beat Jurassic Express senseless with chairs and other items.
New Year’s Smash Results – Main Event
Mercedes Mone put her TBS Championship on the line against Willow Nightingale in the main event. The challenger has been showing great improvement and potential lately, and she showed out in this one as well. After an entertaining match you’d expect her to lose, she proved hard work pays off, and is the new TBS Champion, along with half of the AEW Women’s Tag Team Champions.
