WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Returning home for the first time in nine games, the Wake Forest baseball team (25-13, 9-9 ACC) used five home runs and seven two-out RBIs to secure an upset win over No. 7 Coastal Carolina (26-10, 13-2 Sun Belt), 10-5, as head coach Tom Walter logged the 950th win of his career on Tuesday night at David F. Couch Ballpark.

The offense came alive against the Chanticleers as the Deacs recorded 15 hits in the game. Overall, 10 Demon Deacons recorded a base hit, with eight finishing the game with an RBI.

Junior Kade Lewis opened the scoring for the Demon Deacons as he hit a two-out RBI single to kickstart a five-run third inning. The Sartell, Minn., native finished the game with a pair of hits to give him his 16th multi-hit game of the season.

Freshman catcher Andrew Costello recorded his first multi-RBI game since February 17 against High Point, hitting a two-run single in the third.

The Deacs continued their onslaught in the bottom of the fifth, as junior left fielder Boston Torres launched his first home run of the season to lead off the inning. Sophomore designated hitter Jackson Miller rocketed his second bomb of the year moments later to push the lead to 7-5.

On the mound, freshman reliever Marcelo Harsch tossed four strikeouts while allowing just one run in 1.2 innings of work. Meanwhile, senior Will Ray added two punchouts to shut the game down in the ninth.

“I’m really happy with the way Duncan [Marsten] threw tonight. It’s not easy to do what he did, throwing against the same team, two Tuesdays in a row like that, especially a team as good as Coastal and as good an offense as Coastal. So, really proud of him. A few too many walks but made the one bad pitch to [Jackson Winer] on the change-up, and he didn’t miss it. So, you know, really, other than that pitch, I was happy with the way Duncan threw. Rhys Bowie, I thought, threw the ball well. Marcelo [Harsch] came into a big situation and did what he’s been doing, getting big strikeouts. It’s good to see Will Ray out there. If we had Will Ray healthy the last couple of weeks, we’d have a couple more wins, for sure. So happy to see him back out there. Offensively did a good job up and down the lineup. Good to see, Kade [Lewis] and [Dalton Wentz] and [Luke Costello] at the top have good days. Good to see Javar [Williams] get a couple of knocks. Jackson Miller hadn’t played in a while and came in and got a couple of hits. Just a solid, solid day offensively with seven two-out RBIs. Wake Forest will be back in action with a three-game series against Big Four foe NC State. The opening game of the series is set for this Friday, with first pitch scheduled for 8 p.m. on the ACC Network.
