AEW World’s End was a physical and entertaining event. The Continental Classic delivered some must-see wrestling, and the other matches took care of your bloodlust. Here are World’s End results, and an opinionated review, of the final AEW PPV of the calendar year.
Continental Classic Semi-Final: Konosuke Takeshita Vs. Kazuchika Okada
A battle between two worldwide accepting championships and two of the best on the roster. The tensions between the two have also been building up to this, as faction mates have been fractioning under the Don Callis Family. These two went at it with pure physicality while working in amazingly smooth reversals. It’s also always a treat to watch their move sets, full of uncommon maneuvers.
The finish of the match was sad to see after such a classic match. Okada won the semi-finals of the prestigious Continental Class by using a screwdriver as a weapon. That also happens to be the trademark tool of Don Callis. Perhaps he’s finally showing favoritism to one over the other?
Continental Classic Semi-Final: Kyle Fletcher Vs. Jon Moxley
This semi-final match had a more controlled pace, but it was still physical. The contest told a story, including multiple believable false finishes. Moxley advances to the finals by putting Fletcher to sleep via chokehold. Fans learned that the screwdriver Okada used was placed there by The Protostar, who couldn’t find it during his match.
Chicago Street Fight For AEW World Tag Team Championship: FTR Vs. Bang Bang Gang
FTR was in control for a large portion of the match. There weren’t many technical abilities being shown off, but they certainly worked in all sorts of weaponry. It was an entertaining match, but it lacked a certain back-and-forth – FTR retained.
World’s End Results – AEW Women’s World Tag Team Championship: Athena & Mercedes Mone Vs. Babes Of Wrath
This match fell short of the matches leading up to it. Athena and Willow Nightingale stood out as the clear talent in this one – clearly the strongest and with the better move sets. Nightingale rolled up Mone to retain the title.
World’s End Results – Gabe Kidd Vs. Darby Allin
AEW loves to oversaturate their events, and this match fits the bill. That said, both were physical and violent, pushing the rules of a standard match. Both men were getting busted open for no reason; nothing felt as physical as the depth the blade went. This is not to say they didn’t put their bodies on the line for fan entertainment – they certainly did that. Darby Allin pulled it out in the end.
World’s End Results – Mixed Nuts Mayhem: The Deathriders Vs. The Conglomeration, Roderick Strong, and Toni Storm
Speaking of matches that didn’t need to be on PPV, these eight met in essentially a tornado tag street fight. It felt like groups of two or three taking turns in the ring to work in their spots. There were no believable false finishes, and every moment involving Toni Storm was nothing more than a comedy gimmick. Mark Storm picked up the pin for his team.
World’s End Results – AEW Women’s World Championship: Kris Statlander Vs. Jaime Hayter
Two of the more powerful and athletic women on the roster showed off those skills that night – plenty of strength and reversals on display. Statlander retained by winning the tough contest. If fans were to be picky, the finishing move looked softer than likely intended, but they left it all out there.
World’s End Results – Continental Cup Final: Okada Vs. Moxley
The two winners from earlier in the night met for the finals of the Continental Classic. Defending Continental Champion Okada put it on the line against Moxley. Moxley was working with a great toll taken from earlier that evening. After getting the worst of it for an extended period, Mox started to fight back.
Okada continued his heel antics from the semi-final. This time, using a low blow while the referee was distracted. It wasn’t long before Moxley got to return the robbing of family jewels. The crowd excitement was building as the injured challenger battled all the way back to win the match, the Continental Classic, and the AEW Continental Championship. It was very odd to see him cut a babyface promo after the match.
World’s End Results – AEW World Heavyweight Championship: Samoa Joe Vs. Swerve Strickland Vs. Adam Page Vs. MJF
This was the main event on the card. All four of these talents have put on classic matches, so this four-way match felt a bit random in the progression of events – just bouncing in and out.
Samoa Joe would eventually be aided by his faction mates from The Opps to take control of the match momentarily, but, unexplainably, they were kicked from ringside in a no-disqualification match. This led to an exchange in which MJF took advantage of the situation. He went on to pin Joe to win the AEW World Heavyweight Championship.
