Lady Deacs Suffer First ACC Loss

The Lady Deacs suffered a tough loss at home against Miami by a score of 64-61. Miami pushed their lead to 64-58 with about 27 seconds left, but the Lady Deacs were able to cut it to only three before running out of time. This marks only the third loss on the season for the Lady Deacs, and their first in ACC conference play.
As a team, the Demon Deacons shot 49% from the field, 29% from three, and 67% from the free throw line. It can be difficult to be critical in such a close game, but 20 turnovers is a huge problem, win or lose. On top of that, the Lady Deacs were once again outrebounded by their opponent. The Hurricanes pulled down 32 boards to the Lady Deacs 28. Its a thin margin, but still worth noting. Defensively, Wake Forest only allowed 40% shooting by the Canes, including only 26% from three point range.
Mary Carter led the way for the Demon Deacons with 13 points on 5-10 shooting, with 6 rebounds and a steal. Grace Oliver had 11 points, also on 5-10 shooting. She also had 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 turnovers. Milan Brown and Aurora Sorbye also contributed 10 points each. Brown had 6 rebounds, 3 assists, but six turnovers. Sorbye had no rebounds, but also had 7 assists and only one turnover. Wake Forest only managed 8 points off the bench. As I mentioned in earlier articles, bench play needs to improve to survive in the ACC.
Up next, the Lady Deacs finish up the non-conference schedule when they host Gardner-Webb at 1pm on Saturday on ACC Extra. The Runnin’ Bulldogs are 3-10 this season, and have not won yet on the road. This should serve as a good get right game for Wake Forest before ACC play begins in earnest. All the makings of a special season are there for the Lady Deacs, they just need to reach out and take it.
