Furman survives chaotic finish, clings to 73–72 win over Richmond in Thanksgiving tournament opener

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Thanksgiving morning was supposed to be about turkey and family, but in the ESPN Events Invitational arena, the Furman Paladins turned it into a thriller. From the opening tip, the game crackled with energy: crisp passes, deep threes, and aggressive drives into the paint. Furman raced to a 15-point first-half lead, moving with precision and confidence, seemingly in complete control. But Richmond refused to fold, clawing back point by point, turning what looked like a comfortable win into a tense finale. In the final minute, five consecutive turnovers had fans on edge, the Spiders closing the gap and testing every ounce of Furman’s resolve. With the clock ticking down, a final contested jumper from Richmond clanged off the rim, and Furman secured the rebound — sealing a 73–72 escape and punching their ticket to the next round, where they will face the winner of the Charlotte vs. Illinois State matchup on Friday.

Early Control: Paladins Set the Pace

From the opening tip, Furman played with precision and poise, moving the ball seamlessly and attacking Richmond’s defense with both speed and strategy. Every possession had purpose, whether it was a quick drive from freshman guard Alex Wilkins, a deep three from Asa Thomas, or a strong post move from Cooper Bowser in the paint. Wilkins looked unstoppable early, hitting mid-range jumpers and driving past defenders to create opportunities, while Thomas’ outside shooting stretched Richmond’s defense and opened lanes for cutters. Bowser’s interior presence helped control rebounds and altered several of Richmond’s shots before they could reach the rim.

By midway through the first half, Furman had built a 15-point lead, executing fast breaks and half-court sets with fluidity. Richmond struggled to keep pace, reacting to Furman’s rhythm rather than creating their own. At halftime, Furman led 43–38, but the first 20 minutes reflected not only the scoreboard but the energy and cohesion of a team in command.

Richmond’s Charge: Spiders Refuse to Fold

The second half brought a dramatic shift. Richmond returned from the locker room with intensity, stepping into passing lanes, increasing defensive pressure, and forcing Furman into contested shots. The Spiders attacked the offensive glass relentlessly, generating second-chance points and chipping away at the Paladins’ lead.

What had appeared to be a safe advantage slowly evaporated. Every missed shot by Furman became fuel for Richmond, every turnover an opportunity for the Spiders. Furman’s once-precise offense began to falter under the pressure, and the lead dwindled from double digits to just a few points. The tension in the arena grew with each possession, transforming a controlled first-half showcase into a high-stakes battle where every play mattered.

The Collapse: Five Turnovers, Tense Finish

The final three minutes tested Furman’s composure. The Paladins, once comfortably ahead, committed five consecutive turnovers, giving Richmond repeated opportunities to snatch the lead. Passes went astray, dribbles were poked free, and Furman’s offense stalled under the Spiders’ relentless pressure. Each possession felt decisive, and Richmond capitalized on every mistake, keeping the score perilously close. What had started as a dominant performance had become a nail-biter, with Furman’s ability to withstand the pressure determining the outcome.

Final Stand: Defense Delivers When It Counts

Even amid the late-game chaos, Furman found one last spark of clarity on defense. Richmond’s final possession produced a mid-range jumper that could have rewritten the story, but the shot rimmed out. Furman secured the rebound as the horn sounded, escaping with the 73–72 win. The scoreline reflected not perfection, but resilience — a hard-earned victory built from early dominance, late adversity, and a clutch defensive stop when it mattered most.

Key Contributors & Stats

The victory was driven by Alex Wilkins, who scored 26 points and helped orchestrate Furman’s offense throughout the game, including during Richmond’s late surge. Asa Thomas added 20 points, with several timely three-pointers that stretched the floor and created driving lanes. Cooper Bowser anchored the paint, controlling rebounds and protecting the rim during critical stretches. Richmond’s late push was powered by aggressive rebounding and scrappy play, which forced turnovers and kept the game dangerously close down the stretch.

Looking Ahead: Next Round Awaits

With the win, Furman advances to face the winner of Charlotte vs. Illinois State in Friday’s second round of the Imagination Bracket. The Paladins demonstrated that they can survive under extreme pressure, but the late-game collapse serves as a warning: maintaining composure and execution in crunch time will be essential if they hope to advance further in the tournament.
