Furman Struggles Offensively in 68–50 Loss at Radford

Bailey Scores 12; Paladins Struggle Early and Can’t Recover

RADFORD, Va. — Furman never found its footing Wednesday night, falling behind early and never fully recovering in a 68–50 loss to Radford at the Dedmon Center. The Paladins shot just 30 percent from the field and 25 percent from three, while the Highlanders controlled momentum from the opening tip and carried it through a decisive middle stretch.

Sophomore guard Lauren Bailey led Furman with 12 points, and Clare Coyle grabbed 7 rebounds, but Radford’s efficiency and energy proved too much on a difficult road night.

First-Quarter Woes Put Furman in a Hole

Radford set the tone immediately. The Highlanders pressured the ball, pushed the pace, and hit early shots that forced Furman onto its heels. The Paladins struggled to settle into their offense, missing several clean looks while committing key turnovers that fed Radford’s fast start.

Instead of the tight, competitive opening Furman hoped for, Radford dictated tempo outright. The Paladins found themselves chasing the game far earlier than expected, setting up a long uphill battle.

Radford Extends Lead Through Sharp Shooting

As the second quarter unfolded, Radford’s confidence grew. The Highlanders spaced the floor well, hit perimeter shots, and consistently generated second-chance opportunities. Their ability to knock down threes — finishing 9-for-21 from deep — helped stretch the margin into double digits.

Furman worked to respond, with Bailey providing bursts of scoring and Coyle competing hard inside, but the Paladins couldn’t string together enough stops or clean possessions to close the gap. Each time Furman made a push, Radford countered with a timely shot.

By halftime, the momentum was firmly in the Highlanders’ favor.

Turnovers and Cold Shooting Stall Furman’s Comeback Attempts

Furman’s defensive effort improved out of the locker room, and the Paladins forced a total of 21 Radford turnovers, but they struggled to convert those opportunities into points. Offensively, Furman continued to fight through scoring droughts, finishing just 18-for-61 from the field and committing 19 turnovers of their own.

Radford, meanwhile, found stability in its half-court sets, using ball movement and rebounding to control the pace. The Highlanders won the glass 46–36, creating the extra possessions that prevented Furman from making a meaningful run.

A small spark in the fourth quarter briefly lifted the Paladins’ energy, but Radford quickly answered, hitting another pair of perimeter shots to seal control down the stretch.

Bailey Leads the Way, but Furman Needs More Balance

Bailey continued her early-season scoring consistency with 12 points, showing composure in tough spots. Coyle’s 7 boards were crucial as Furman tried to claw back into the game. But on a night when the Paladins needed multiple scoring threats, too many possessions ended without points or rhythm.

Coach and staff will undoubtedly point to shot selection, spacing, and turnover reduction as key focus areas moving forward.

Looking Ahead for Furman

The loss drops Furman to 2–4, and Wednesday’s performance highlighted the challenges of playing from behind on the road. The Paladins have shown flashes of strong execution this season, but sustaining it across all four quarters remains the next step.

With Southern Conference play approaching, Furman will look to blend the defensive pressure it showed at times with cleaner offensive execution and better early-game control.

Radford, meanwhile, collects an important early-season win and enters the next stretch with momentum.
