The formula was simple, but it was highly effective for ACU.

Abilene Christian dominated possession, protected the football, and delivered timely defensive plays Saturday night as the Wildcats earned a hard-fought 20-14 victory over Central Arkansas at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium. The win improved ACU to 3-4 overall and, more importantly, 2-0 in United Athletic Conference play.

Coming off a convincing victory over West Florida, the Wildcats continued to show growth on both sides of the ball, using a disciplined, methodical approach to keep Central Arkansas off balance throughout the evening.

ACU Wildcats Establish Control Early

From the opening drive, ACU made its intentions clear.

The Wildcats received the kickoff and immediately put together an impressive 18-play, 66-yard drive that consumed 7:30 off the clock. While the march ended with a 26-yard field goal from Brandon Perez, it set the tone for the entire night. ACU wasn’t looking for quick strikes. The Wildcats wanted to control tempo, win field position, and wear down the Bears.

That strategy paid off again late in the first quarter.

After Central Arkansas moved into ACU territory, defensive back Santana Miller made one of the game’s biggest plays, tipping a pass to himself for an interception and returning it 29 yards. The turnover gave ACU excellent field position, and two plays later quarterback Tucker Parks powered into the end zone from two yards out to extend the lead to 10-0.

Parks Leads Efficient Offensive Performance

While the Wildcats didn’t post eye-popping offensive numbers, Parks delivered exactly the type of performance ACU needed.

The quarterback completed 19 of 26 passes for 186 yards and a touchdown while also leading the team in rushing with 45 yards and another score. Most importantly, Parks avoided turnovers and consistently delivered on third down situations.

His best throw of the night came midway through the second quarter when he found Dallas Dudley on a 10-yard touchdown strike to cap a 10-play, 75-yard drive. The score pushed ACU’s advantage to 17-0 and gave the Wildcats firm control heading into halftime.

Tight end Jayden York was Parks’ favorite target, hauling in seven receptions for 72 yards and helping extend several key drives throughout the contest.

ACU Defense Comes Up with Timely Stops

The Wildcats’ defense continued its recent strong play by holding Central Arkansas scoreless through the first two quarters.

After shutting out West Florida in the first half a week earlier, ACU again dominated early, limiting the Bears’ opportunities and forcing mistakes. The biggest moment came with Miller’s interception, but the defense also consistently forced Central Arkansas into difficult third-down situations.

The Bears finally broke through early in the third quarter when quarterback Donovyn Omolo scored on a 30-yard run to cut the deficit to 17-7. Later, Jalen Washington added a 46-yard touchdown run that brought Central Arkansas within six points at 20-14.

Despite allowing a pair of explosive plays, the defense never broke completely and forced the Bears to play from behind all evening.

Third-Down Excellence Becomes Difference for ACU

If there was one statistic that defined the game, it was third-down efficiency.

ACU converted 10 of 14 third-down opportunities, repeatedly extending drives and keeping Central Arkansas’ offense on the sideline. The Wildcats finished with 36:23 of possession time compared to just 23:37 for the Bears.

The defining sequence came after Central Arkansas trimmed the lead to six points in the fourth quarter.

Instead of giving the Bears another opportunity, ACU mounted a game-clinching 15-play drive that consumed the final 8:11 of regulation. Parks converted a critical third-and-12 with a 17-yard scramble before the Wildcats picked up several additional first downs to completely drain the remaining clock. Central Arkansas never got the ball back.

It was the kind of drive coaches dream about and one that demonstrated the Wildcats’ maturity and composure in a pressure situation.

Winning the Situational Battle

The overall numbers were relatively even. ACU totaled 303 yards to Central Arkansas’ 289. However, the Wildcats excelled in the game’s most important situations.

ACU finished with:

  • A 23-16 advantage in first downs.
  • A 10-of-14 third-down conversion rate.
  • Zero turnovers compared to two by Central Arkansas.
  • Nearly thirteen more minutes of possession time.

Those small advantages added up over four quarters and ultimately proved decisive.

Final Thoughts

Championship-caliber teams understand how to win in different ways.

A week after putting together a dominant performance against West Florida, ACU showed another side of its identity against Central Arkansas. The Wildcats didn’t rely on explosive plays or overwhelming offensive production. Instead, they won with patience, execution, and situational football.

Parks managed the game effectively, the defense delivered key takeaways, and the offense controlled the clock when it mattered most. Most importantly, ACU remained unbeaten in conference play and continued building momentum heading into the heart of the UAC schedule.

For a program with postseason aspirations, Saturday’s 20-14 victory may have been one of the Wildcats’ most complete and mature performances of the season.
