HICKORY, NC: Tied at two with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, the Hickory Crawdads (30-11, 64-41) took Styven Paez to task and scored five runs to pull away from the Augusta GreenJackets (22-18, 57-49) and take a 7-2 victory to claim a series win.

The Crawdads late lead came on the first batter Paez saw, as Augusta brought him in to replace Logan Forsythe with two on and two down. Forsythe had allowed just two baserunners in 2.2 frames, but it was Paez who was tasked with the final out of the inning, and Paez who paid the price. Pablo Guerrero greeted him with a two-run double to put the Crawdads in front, and three straight subsequent hits led to three more runs to put the game out of reach.

Augusta’s lone burst of offense came in the top of the 6th, as the top of the order chased starter Jesus Lafalaise and tied the game at two. Jacob Jarrell’s first professional extra base hit was an RBI double, and one batter later, Cooper McMurray brought him home with a single to tie the game. The Jackets would put the go-ahead run at third with just one out, but Wily Villar entered from the bullpen and retired back-to-back batters to keep the game equal in the middle innings.
Despite the final result, it was a very strong second Single-A start from Brody Fowler. Fowler worked around an early home run from Kaden Carpenter to allow just two runs in five innings, striking out five batters while also not allowing a walk. Perhaps most importantly, Fowler’s velocity was notably higher than his first start in Salem, a good sign for a starter Augusta will count on down the stretch.

Geury Rodriguez worked a hitless ninth inning, and the deflated Augusta offense was unable to overcome the heavy hole in their final offensive chance. The Crawdads end the season series victorious in 7 of 12 games and won each of the last three games in both series on the season.

The GreenJackets will now return home to SRP Park for the penultimate homestand of the 2026 campaign, following a much needed off day tomorrow. The first half champion Charleston RiverDogs come to town, after splitting a series in Augusta back in early May. Hickory heads on the road to Kannapolis, now with a firm grasp on the division lead with just four weeks left in the regular season.
