GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman’s second half rally fell short to the High Point Panthers in a 17-12 Big South Conference defeat on Senior Day, Saturday afternoon in women’s lacrosse action at Paladin Stadium.

Furman drops to 7-8 overall and 3-3 in the Big South. With the win, High Point improves to 5-8 on the season and 5-1 in conference play.

Prior to the contest, the Paladins honored their five seniors and three graduate students in Madigan Brewer, Grace Gibson, Reynolds Hester, Skylar Hilmer, Shae Insinga, Blaine Randolph, Abby Shearer, and Audrey Smith.

Allie Kandel came off the bench to lead Furman offensively with four points on three goals and an assist. Insinga provided three points on two goals and an assist while Lily Toole scored three times. Cate Noone won a career best six draws. Gibson tied her season high of three ground balls and Zoe Milmoe matched her career best of four caused turnovers. The Paladins played all three of their goalies on Saturday with Brewer finishing with three saves.

Tatum Goettelmann paced the Panthers with six points on three goals and three assists. Shannon Smith scored a match high five goals. Goalie Ava Welsh totaled 10 saves and two ground balls.

After the teams combined for just four goals in the first quarter, High Point outscored the Paladins 10-2 in the second to hold a 13-3 lead at intermission. Insinga had cut Furman’s deficit down to 7-3 at the 3:20 mark before the Panthers reeled off six consecutive goals to finish the half.

The Paladin defense limited High Point to just two goals in the third quarter, along forced five turnovers, to trail 15-8 heading into the fourth quarter. Toole and Bella Raynish both scored twice in the third quarter with Furman closing out the period scoring three straight times. The Paladins continued their run into the final 15 minutes, posting three consecutive goals from Kandel to make it a 15-11 contest with 6:36 remaining in regulation.

The Panthers closed out the contest netting two of the last three goals to secure the 17-12 victory.

Furman held a 31-29 advantage over High Point in shots and 13-12 in ground balls. The Paladins registered 14 draws and nine caused turnovers while forcing the Panthers into 15 turnovers.
Furman begins a two-game road trip to close out the regular season next Saturday, April 18, traveling to Rock Hill, S.C., for a 1 p.m. opening draw at Winthrop.
