CLEMSON, S.C. – Izzy Castelloe poured in a match high 18 kills Thursday evening to propel the Furman volleyball team to a 3-2 (25-15, 18-25, 27-25, 26-28, 15-12) victory over the Clemson Tigers in its opening match of the Tiger Classic at Jervey Gym.

Furman improves to 6-4 on the season while Clemson drops to 5-5 overall.
The Paladins collect their first win over the Tigers since 2015 and first against an ACC opponent since defeating Georgia Tech at the Georgia Tech Invite in 2017.

“Very excited for the team,” said head coach Michelle Young. “I would have liked to see us execute a little better from the service line, but we passed very well and I’m proud of the girls’ effort this evening with a win on the road.”

Castelloe turned in her 10th straight double-digit kill outing this season, and 14 out of 15 dating back to last year, after hitting .350 and totaling 18 kills. Tennyson Gorman contributed 11 kills on .647 hitting to go with five blocks and three service aces. Kacie Moore had a team high eight blocks and registered nine kills. Emily Navarro dished out 27 assists and Morgan Baldridge 12. Ashtan Dodson and Kennedy Seekford both had 14 digs.

Maddie Anspaugh led Clemson with 15 kills and Lauren Schneider recorded 10. Addie Rains contributed 15 digs and Katherine Sandt tallied a double-double on 33 assists and 10 digs.

Furman hit .500 in the opening set and held the Tigers to a negative clip at -.103 to secure the 25-15 win. Castelloe and Campbell Woods both had four kills, Navarro six assists, and Seekford four digs. The teams traded the first 10 points when the Paladins scored five of the next seven to lead by three on Amber Watson’s kill. Furman outscored Clemson, 10-3, after the media timeout and recorded the last four points.

The Tigers bounced back with a 25-18 victory in the second set to tie the match at 1-1. The Paladins posted a .292 hitting percentage in the frame but Clemson answered with a .455 mark. Watson had a team best four kills on .500 hitting, and Baldridge added five assists and three digs.

The third set went into extra points with Furman holding on for the 27-25 triumph. Castelloe added another six kills on .500 hitting with Navarro posting seven assists and Dodson seven digs. The Paladins turned in a .306 hitting percentage. Furman opened on a 10-4 run and built an 18-10 advantage following Moore’s kill. The Tigers rallied back to even the score at 22-22 to cap a 12-4 run. The Paladins picked up the next two points, but the Tigers answered with two consecutive to tie the score again at 24-24. The teams exchanged the next two points when a kill from Moore and Clemson attack error gave the Paladins the win.

The fourth set featured 14 ties and five lead changes as the frame also went into extras with the Tigers earning the 28-26 victory. Furman was limited to just .143 hitting in the set. Castelloe led the way with five kills, Navarro seven assists, and Seekford six digs.

The Paladins captured the match following a 15-12 win in the fifth set. Both teams posted negative hitting marks during the frame with Clemson having three more attack errors than Furman. Gorman had three kills, Navarro three assists, and Seekford two digs. Moore and Watson gave the Paladins an early 6-3 advantage after their combination block when the Tigers responded with four consecutive points to take a 7-6 lead. Furman used a 6-3 run to hold a 12-10 advantage on Navarro’s kill. After Clemson made it 12-12, the Paladins picked up the last three points off blocks from Castelloe and Gorman to claim the win.

Furman finished the contest hitting .243 overall and held a 55-49 advantage in kills, and 47-46 in assists. The Paladins tied their season high of 15 blocks.
