Brandon’s Debut, a Weather Scare, and a Blowout in the Making: Vols Open 2026 Against Furman

By Carlos Jackson | SOTG (Students of the Game) | Greenville Sports Media Knoxville, Tenn.

KNOXVILLE — Neyland Stadium doesn’t do quiet openers, and it wasn’t about to start with this one. No. 18 Tennessee kicked off its 2026 season Saturday against Furman with more storylines walking through the tunnel than most teams carry into October — a true freshman under center, a brand-new voice calling the defense, and a sky that spent the morning threatening to rain on all of it.

The Vols and Paladins haven’t shared a field since the guns of World War II went quiet. The first two meetings — 1941 and 1942 — ended 32-6 and 52-7, Tennessee both times. Eighty-some years later, Josh Heupel’s group came in expected to add a third lopsided chapter, but expectations and what actually happens on the grass are two different animals, and that’s why they play the games.

THE SETUP

Vol Walk got scratched before a single ball was snapped — threatening weather rolling toward Knoxville forced UT to pull the pregame tradition, a reminder that Mother Nature doesn’t care about your season opener. Gates opened at 1 p.m., a flyover was still on for 3:21, and kickoff held at 3:30 EDT in front of a Neyland crowd getting its first look at the offseason concourse upgrades — wider walkways, new video boards, a sound system with some actual teeth to it.

But the real headline walked out with the offense: Faizon Brandon, the true freshman out of Greensboro, North Carolina, became the first newcomer to start a Week 1 game at quarterback for Tennessee since 2004. That’s not a typo. Two decades. Heupel handed the keys to a kid who enrolled in January, and Neyland was about to find out in real time whether that trust was earned.

On the other sideline, Furman came in 1-0, an FCS team from the Southern Conference that Tennessee had no business treating lightly on paper — not after Heupel’s group spent the offseason getting reminded that “should win” and “will win” aren’t the same sentence in this building anymore. Still, the numbers weren’t kind to the Paladins: Heupel’s Vols have beaten FCS competition by better than 58 points a game on average since he arrived.

Add it up: new quarterback, new defensive coordinator in Jim Knowles making his Tennessee debut, a senior linebacker in Arion Carter starting the year suspended, and a fan base that spent all offseason waiting to exhale. This was never just a season-opening tune-up. This was Tennessee finding out who it is.

FIRST QUARTER

Tennessee won the coin toss and did something Heupel’s teams don’t do often — deferred, sending Furman’s offense out first and trusting Knowles to make a statement out of the gate. It didn’t take long. Tyree Weathersby beat his man off the edge on the game’s very first snap and dropped the Paladins’ quarterback for a sack, and by the time the punt team jogged on, Furman had gone three-and-out. Message sent: Knowles’ defense wasn’t here to ease into anything.

That’s all the invitation Brandon needed. The freshman marched Tennessee 60 yards on eight plays, methodical and clean, and capped it by finding Ethan Davis for the touchdown. First real series of the Faizon Brandon era, and it ended in the end zone. Two decades of waiting for a true freshman starter, and it took him one drive to make it look unremarkable — which, for a debut like this, is about the highest compliment there is.

Tennessee’s follow-up drive didn’t have the same rhythm. The offense stalled out, and Heupel showed his hand early — going for it on fourth down instead of settling for points. The gamble didn’t pay off this time; the Vols came up short and turned it over on downs. A small hiccup after a near-perfect opening script, but the kind of thing that happens when a true freshman quarterback is still finding his footing possession to possession.

Furman found its own answer on the ground. Quarterback Jake Garcia picked up both of the Paladins’ first downs on the ensuing drive with his legs, not his arm — a reminder that Knowles’ defense, dominant on the opening series, still has some rust to shake off against a mobile quarterback willing to tuck it and run.

Knowles’ defense answered right back. Xavier Gilliam, making his Tennessee debut, blew up a third down with a sack to force Furman off the field — the kind of first impression a new face wants to make in front of a Neyland crowd still sizing him up.

The one blemish so far on Tennessee’s side of the ball: the ground game hasn’t found a crack yet. Furman has bottled up the Vols’ rushing attack through the first quarter, forcing Brandon to try to do it through the air instead of leaning on the run to ease him in.

The quarter closed with Furman facing third-and-10 from their own 14 — backed up and searching for answers. But make no mistake, the Paladins are still standing. Tennessee’s offense has cooled since that opening touchdown drive, still hunting for a rushing rhythm, and the scoreboard reads just 7-0. Fifteen minutes in, and this one hasn’t turned into the rout the odds promised — yet.

SECOND QUARTER

Tennessee picked up right where it left off. With Furman still pinned at their own 14 facing third down, Ed Spillman got home for another sack — the third one of the game for a Vols pass rush that has made life miserable on Garcia all afternoon. Knowles’ defense carrying that first-quarter energy straight into the second, and Furman still hasn’t found any air to breathe.

The secondary got in on it too. With 7:56 left in the half, Tennessee’s defensive backs locked things down well enough to force another turnover on downs — the second time already tonight the Vols have simply taken the ball away by refusing to give an inch. Whatever questions surrounded this defense in fall camp, they’re getting answered early.

That extra possession paid off. Tennessee turned it into an 11-play, 66-yard drive that ate clock and found the end zone with 3:05 left in the half, DeSean Bishop punching it in from a yard out. That’s the drive the offense needed — longer, more patient, more in sync than anything since the opening series, exactly the kind of rhythm Brandon and this offense have been chasing since that early fourth-down miss.

Furman, meanwhile, still hasn’t found a way to move the ball outside those two Garcia scrambles. The Vols’ pass rush has made sure of that — Garcia hasn’t had a clean pocket to work with all afternoon, and it’s showing.

Tennessee wasn’t done. Working the two-minute drill, Brandon started using his legs to move the chains, mixing in a few Bishop carries along the way — suddenly the quarterback run element that had been missing all game is very much alive. A rushing attack that couldn’t find a crack in the first quarter is bending Furman’s defense at the worst possible time for the Paladins, right before the half.

Brandon finished the drive himself, punching in a 7-yard touchdown run to cap it off. That gives the freshman two rushing touchdowns and a passing touchdown before halftime has even arrived — a debut that started as “don’t turn it over” and has turned into a full-blown statement.

The Vols tacked on another score to push it to 28-0, and whatever doubt existed about this one being competitive is fading fast.

THIRD QUARTER

Furman deferred and it cost them again — Tennessee got the ball to start the second half and needed almost no time to make it hurt. A 3-play, 76-yard drive ended with Brandon hitting Mike Matthews for a 55-yard touchdown, and just like that it’s 35-0. The uptempo offense has been humming, which is its own kind of statement on a scorching afternoon in Knoxville — the kind of heat that usually slows an offense down, not speeds it up.

no one in between.

Knowles’ defense forced another three-and-out, and Brandon went right back to the well — finding Matthews again, this time for 57 yards and a touchdown. Two deep balls to the same guy in the span of a few minutes; whatever chemistry those two built over fall camp, it’s showing up exactly when it matters.

57 yards over the top!

The Vols defense forced yet another three-and-out — dominant doesn’t begin to cover it, with Furman held to just four first downs on the night. But the perfect night hit its first blemish on the ensuing Tennessee possession: Joshua Stoneking forced a fumble, Furman recovered, and the Paladins suddenly have the ball at the Vols’ 38 — Tennessee’s first turnover of the season, and about the only thing that’s gone right for Furman all afternoon.

Buried in the box score: Xavier Gilliam now has three sacks in his Tennessee debut, the most by a Vol since Darrell Taylor. Not a bad way to introduce yourself to Neyland.

Furman cashed in that turnover for three points, the first blemish on the shutout — but with the game well in hand, Heupel turned to backup George MacIntyre with 4:55 left in the third. MacIntyre didn’t take long to make his mark either, leading a drive that ended with a 22-yard touchdown pass to true freshman Tristen Keys — the first of Keys’ career. Tennessee 49, Furman 3, and the Vols are deep enough to keep scoring with the backups in.

FOURTH QUARTER

Brandon’s day is done, and what a day it was: three passing touchdowns, two rushing touchdowns, five total — tying Tyler Bray and Erik Ainge for the most touchdowns ever by a Tennessee freshman. Two decades of waiting for a true freshman to take the reins, and he answered with a performance that puts him in the same sentence as two of the better names to ever play the position at Tennessee.

The backups opened the fourth quarter with a fumble, and Furman finally cashed in on the good field position — Isaiah Davis ran it in from 23 yards out to make it 49-9 with 13:33 left. Garbage-time football now, but Furman gets to walk away with at least a touchdown to show for the day.

Tennessee answered right back, and in style — Justin Baker broke off a 73-yard touchdown run, the longest by a Vol since Jaylen Wright’s 82-yarder back in 2023. Score’s 56-9 with 11:33 to go, and the backups are putting on just as much of a show as the starters did.

From there, Tennessee cruised out the clock. With backups rotating in on both sides and the outcome long since decided, the Vols closed out their season opener leading 56-9 with the final two minutes winding down — a laugher by any measure, exactly the kind of tune-up performance Heupel needed heading into a much tougher test at Georgia Tech next week.

THE TAKEAWAY

Tennessee wanted a clean, no-doubt-about-it season opener, and it got exactly that. The Faizon Brandon era didn’t just start — it announced itself, five touchdowns and all. Jim Knowles’ defense looked every bit the upgrade Tennessee paid for. And somewhere in Atlanta, Georgia Tech just watched a preview of what’s coming to town next Saturday.

The Vols have one week to enjoy this one. Next Saturday won’t be this easy.
