ASHEVILLE, N.C. — March basketball has a way of amplifying every possession. Inside Harrah’s Cherokee Center on Friday night, the tension built with every run and every defensive stop as two teams fought to keep their seasons alive.

For a while, the game hung in the balance.

But when the defining moments arrived, the UNC Greensboro Spartans found another gear.

Behind a dominant scoring performance from KJ Younger and strong work on the glass from Justin Neely, UNC Greensboro gradually pulled away from the VMI Keydets for an 84–70 victory in the opening round of the Southern Conference Tournament.

Younger poured in 29 points, repeatedly delivering timely baskets whenever VMI threatened to shift the momentum. Neely controlled the interior with 10 rebounds, helping the Spartans dictate the tempo throughout the second half.

For much of the night, however, the outcome remained unsettled.

Early Pace Sets the Tone

From the opening tip, both teams played with the urgency expected in postseason basketball.

UNC Greensboro struck first when Younger slipped behind the defense for a transition layup just seconds into the game. Moments later, Neely knocked down a short jumper in the lane, giving the Spartans early momentum.

VMI answered quickly.

Guard Linus Holmström buried a corner three that briefly energized the Keydets’ bench, while forward Kaden Stuckey battled inside for second-chance opportunities.

The early minutes unfolded in a steady rhythm of quick strikes and defensive adjustments.

Midway through the half, Younger drilled a deep three from the wing that brought the Spartan fans to their feet. The shot ignited a brief scoring run that helped UNC Greensboro begin creating separation.

As the Spartans settled into their offense, crisp ball movement opened driving lanes and perimeter looks. By the time the halftime buzzer sounded, UNC Greensboro had built a 39–27 lead, fueled by efficient scoring and defensive pressure that forced VMI into difficult late-shot attempts.

VMI Pushes Back

The Keydets weren’t ready to let the game slip away.

Coming out of halftime, VMI attacked the paint with renewed aggression. Holmström connected on a jumper early in the half, and Stuckey continued battling for rebounds that extended several Keydet possessions.

Stuckey finished the night with 10 rebounds, providing a steady presence on the boards.

Moments later, Holmström buried another basket from the perimeter, trimming the deficit and briefly shifting the energy inside the arena. The VMI section of the crowd rose to its feet as the Keydets began creeping back into the game.

For the first time since early in the contest, the momentum appeared to tilt toward VMI.

UNC Greensboro needed a response.

Turning Point: Younger Takes Over

That response came from Younger.

Midway through the second half, with VMI threatening to tighten the game, Younger delivered the sequence that ultimately swung control back to the Spartans.

First came a deep three from the right wing that quieted the Keydets’ rally. On the next possession, Younger attacked the lane and finished through contact.

Five quick points later, UNC Greensboro had breathing room again.

From that moment forward, the Spartans gradually began to pull away. Younger continued to find scoring opportunities, finishing the night with 29 points to lead all players.

Spartans Close It Out

As the final minutes approached, UNC Greensboro leaned on composure and execution.

Neely controlled the boards, limiting second-chance opportunities for VMI while helping the Spartans extend their own possessions. UNC Greensboro finished with 40 rebounds and 19 assists, a reflection of the balanced attack that kept the offense moving throughout the second half.

Holmström continued to battle for VMI, finishing with 24 points to lead the Keydets. But each late basket was answered by the Spartans as they methodically protected their lead.

When the final buzzer sounded, UNC Greensboro had secured the 84–70 victory, advancing in the Southern Conference Tournament and keeping its postseason hopes alive.

Arena Atmosphere

The tournament environment added another layer of intensity throughout the night.

Fans from both programs filled sections of the arena, rising during key runs and reacting loudly to every big shot or defensive stop. When Younger buried his second-half three that halted VMI’s rally, the roar from Spartan supporters echoed across the arena.

Moments like that captured the spirit of conference tournament basketball — where every basket carries the weight of a season.

Standout Performers

UNC Greensboro Spartans

  • KJ Younger — 29 points, sparked the Spartans’ decisive second-half run.
  • Justin Neely — 10 rebounds, anchored the interior defense and controlled the glass.
  • Lilian Marville — 5 assists and 3 steals, helping drive UNC Greensboro’s ball movement.

VMI Keydets

  • Linus Holmström — 24 points and 3 steals, leading the Keydets offensively.
  • Kaden Stuckey — 10 rebounds, providing energy and second-chance opportunities.

By the Numbers

  • Final Score: UNC Greensboro 84, VMI 70
  • Halftime: UNC Greensboro led 39–27
  • Leading Scorer: KJ Younger (29 points)
  • VMI Leading Scorer: Linus Holmström (24 points)

What’s Next

With the victory, UNC Greensboro advances to the next round of the Southern Conference Tournament in Asheville, gaining momentum as postseason play continues.

For VMI, the loss closes the season, though the Keydets showed resilience with several second-half pushes that briefly threatened to turn the game.

But when the defining moments arrived Friday night, the Spartans delivered — and in March, those moments mean everything.
