SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — A game for the ages unfolded Friday night as the Furman Paladins pulled off a dramatic 65–64 road victory over the Wofford Terriers at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. With the Paladins down by one in the final seconds, guard Alyssa Ervin rose through traffic and sank a buzzer-beating jumper that flipped the scoreboard and ignited a celebration on the Furman bench. The stunning finish snapped Wofford’s five-game winning streak and kept Furman in the thick of the Southern Conference title race, proving that every defensive stop, rebound, and basket mattered in a game defined by tension and precision.

Defensive Battle Sets the Tone

From the opening tip, it was clear that both teams were in a battle for control. Furman and Wofford traded baskets in a low-scoring, hard-fought first half, with neither side able to build a comfortable lead. Aggressive defense clogged the paint, forced contested shots, and slowed the pace to a chess match where one mistake could shift momentum. Furman relied on the interior dominance of Clare Coyle, who powered through contact to finish with 18 points and 10 rebounds, asserting herself as the anchor of the Paladins’ paint presence. Wofford countered with Queen Ikhiuwu, who matched Coyle point for point, scoring 18 points and pulling down eight rebounds, proving her importance as a post threat and keeping the Terriers within striking distance.

Late Momentum Swings

The third quarter provided glimpses of what would become the final drama. Furman’s Lauren Bailey hit two timely three-pointers that stalled Wofford’s offensive rhythm, while Gabby Mundy orchestrated the Terriers’ attack with poise, finishing with 12 points and five assists. Maddie Heiss added 10 points for Wofford, the only other Terrier in double figures. Furman slowly inched ahead, but Wofford’s balanced scoring and defensive pressure ensured the game remained tight. By the start of the fourth quarter, it was a one-possession game, every basket and turnover magnified under the stadium lights.

The Tension of the Final Minutes

As the clock wound down, the atmosphere became electric. Wofford held a one-point lead, forcing Furman to execute with precision. Each pass, each dribble, carried the weight of the entire game. Clare Coyle secured key rebounds in the paint, while Ervin moved to find a lane to shoot. With seconds ticking away, the Paladins ran their final set. Ervin elevated above defenders, released a high-arching jumper, and sent the ball swishing through the net as the buzzer blared. The arena erupted — a one-point turnaround that erased Wofford’s lead and delivered Furman the win in a moment that will be remembered all season.

Key Players Make Their Mark

Furman’s victory was a team effort anchored by its stars. Ervin led with 21 points, Coyle dominated the boards with 10 rebounds, Bailey contributed 11 points including critical threes, and Chantelle Stuart added seven assists to keep the offense flowing. Wofford’s Queen Ikhiuwu also scored 18 points, while Mundy’s 12 points and five assists kept the Terriers competitive throughout the game. The supporting performances in a tight defensive contest proved the importance of every contribution, from starters to bench players.

Implications for the SoCon Race

The narrow victory keeps Furman in strong position in the Southern Conference, improving to 14–8 overall and 6–1 in SoCon play, while Wofford slips to 11–10 and 5–2. For Furman, this dramatic road win reinforces their ability to perform under pressure, and they will return home Thursday, Feb. 5, to face conference leader Chattanooga in a matchup that could reshape the SoCon standings. Wofford will aim to rebound against ETSU the same night, seeking to restart the momentum lost in the final moments of this thriller.
