Draft Day for the Carolina Panthers

Happy Draft Day to players, fans, ladies and gentlemen of all ages. Today, we will discuss an opinion of mine that I have long had regarding the Panthers and what they should do with the number eight pick. Initially, I was all for not trading the pick, but over time, that opinion has slightly shifted so I look forward to getting anyone else’s opinions and comments on this topic.

The Panthers offense seemed to round into shape towards the end of last year with the ability to score and Bryce Young starting to look like the QB of the future under Dave Canales. Once I learned that we would have the number eight overall pick, my initial thought was just to stay put and draft the best player available. However, after learning that the Panthers do not have another pick until pick fifty-seven, I decided that it may not be a bad idea to trade back for some extra draft capital. Afterall, the Panthers gave up far too much to the Bears a few years ago to select Bryce. Now, the defense needs to get depth and young in order to be competitive.

While, I would love for the Panthers to get a Jalon Walker, Mykell Williams, Jihad Campbell, or a Mason Graham with the eighth overall pick, I think it would do them far better to gain a few extra picks. The reason I say this is because we all know the talent drops off significantly throughout the draft, and when you do not have a pick between eight and fifty-seven, you are losing out on a ton of the better talent in the draft. I would love for the Panthers to move back from eight to maybe twelve or thirteen, while gaining an extra pick in the thirties or forties. At this point, the Panthers need to get very young on defense while also gaining tons of depth to help build culture.

If I am Dan Morgan, I am trading with just about anyone other than the Bears. I am still not over the king’s ransom we gave them to get the number one pick to get Bryce Young. There are so many Gamecocks already on this roster, that is going to be my philosophy here again. Depending how far the Panthers trade back, I am taking Nick Emmanwori, the highly touted safety from South Carolina. Then, to get an edge rusher, I will take Kyle Kennard when he falls to me in the third round if my estimations are correct. At the end of the day, the Panthers need depth and youth on defense, and I will gladly take Gamecock players to help instill a culture that has been long missing for the Carolina Panthers. With all that said, you tell me, am I right, or am I wrong? I welcome any and all feedback and these are just my opinions. We will find out this evening what happens and can’t wait to see the draft.
