Samoa Joe celebrates winning the AEW World Trios Championship on Dynamite
Owen Hart Tournament
The first match of the night was between the AEW TBS Champion Mercedes Mone and the Ring of Honor Women’s Champion Athena. This was also part of the Women’s Owen Cup. Side note: Athena needs to drop the spinner-belt knockoff.
This match had the pace and phsyicality of a PPV match, but it was clear Athena was the stronger of the two. Both women had great reversals leading to believable false finishes. Mone pulled out the victory and moves on to the finals of the Owen.
More AEW Action In The Owen
‘Hangman’ Adam Page faced Josh Alexander in his surprise debut in the Owen. Both men laid the strikes in deep and paired them with slick reversals. Page did a great moonsault from the top to the floor, although it took them too long in the awkward set-up.
For those unfamiliar with Alexander, this was a decent introduction. It was strange booking to have him lose clean in his debut, but he did everything he could to represent himself well. Page moves on in the Owen to face Kyle Fletcher, who paid him a visit after the match. Don Callis whispered something to Alexander, who then left Page lifeless, allowing Fletcher to enjoy inflicting further punishment.
AEW Tag Team Championship
The next match saw The Gates of Agony with a title match against The Hurt Syndicate. Despite the size and power of the challengers, Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin were dominant in this one. MJF visited the champions in the ring after the match.
MJF has been rejected by Lashley and Benjamin these last few weeks. So, in another attempt to change their mind, MJF brought out some ‘ladies of the night’ for the team to enjoy for the night, all it costs, is a thumbs up to join. Benjamin would think about the ladies, but ultimately gave a thumbs down. MJF would leave the ladies along with his watch, and promised more of both when he joined The Hurt Syndicate.
More Owen
Will Ospreay versus Konosuke Takeshita was the next feature of the Owen Hart Tournament. This match could be considered to feature the best reversals of the evening. Ospreay started planting some stiff potatoes, and Takeshita was happy to pick up the violence.
The pace increased and the reversals improved further, leading to multiple false finishes executed perfectly. Ospreay eventually got a pinfall victory after hitting numerous finishers. He advanced to the finals of the Owen Hart Tournament.
Main Event
The World Trios Champions, The Deathriders, defended those titles against The Opps in the main event. Moxley attacked one-third of The Opps, Hook, leaving some questions to start the match. Mox filled in for Pac, and Power House Hobbs for Hook.
The Young Bucks tried to give The Deathriders assistance, but Swerve Strickland intervened. Willow Nightingale also appeared to take care of Marina Shafir. This led to Samoa Joe choking out Jon Moxley to win the AEW World Trios Championship.
