AEW Dynamite opened this week with Will Ospreay versus Buddy Matthews. They would open the match with pace and smooth reversals. They built the match up to include great striking and told a story inside the match. After some tense false finishes both ways, Will Osprey would pull out the victory. After the match, Ospreay would take the mic and tell Matthews how good he is, saying he doesn’t need to follow Malakai Black. In a surprise, the two shook hands on it.
AEW Tag Title Storyline
Private Party would celebrate their tag team title retention but were quickly interrupted by The Hurt Syndicate. The Hurt Syndicate claimed to be there with good intentions, even proposing a toast to the AEW Tag Team Champions. During the toast, they would also toast to The Hurt Syndicate taking those titles, leaving Private Party stunned.
Bobby Lashley then had a match against Mark Briscoe. Lashley started strong with multiple power moves, leaving Briscoe fighting from behind. Briscoe did get his shine, including a dive over the top rope to the outside. That would be near the end for Briscoe, as Lashley would use his strength to regain control and sink in The Hurt Lock for a submission victory. Shelton Benjamin and Lashley would start to jump Briscoe after the match, but Private Party would run to his aid, and The Hurt Syndicate powdered.
Casino Gauntlet Match On AEW Dynamite
The Casino Gauntlet Match started with Jay White and Adam Page, two men with a heated rivalry. The first pinfall or submission wins this match type, with a new man entering in intervals. This did not start with your typical collar and elbow, as they opened with stiff chops.
After playing Swerve Strickland’s music as a mind-game attempt, Ricochet would be the next entrant in the match. Wheeler Yuta, Adam Cole, Daniel Garcia, Powerhouse Hobbs, Roderick Strong, and Lance Archer joined. There was stiff striking, but otherwise, it was standard rumble-style action. Kyle O’Riley was the next participant, and the Undisputed Kingdom would gain control with three of them in the match. During his entrance, Jeff Jarrett was jumped by Wheel Yuta, and forced backstage before he could enter, a clear message from Jon Moxley.
Powerhouse Hobbs would take advantage of a relatively empty ring to win the match, and an opportunity at Jon Moxley for the AEW World Championship next week. Hobbs would get a short promo before Jarrett made his way back to the ring. MJF would quickly interrupt Jarrett, coming to the ring to go face-to-face. Behind condescending tones and snarky remarks, MJF would offer to manage Jarrett all the way to the AEW World Championship. All he wants in return is a title match. Jarrett would not so respectfully decline.
Dynamite World Championship Storyline
During the next segment, Cope aimed at Jon Moxley during his in-ring promo, warning Moxley he was dealing with a different animal. Not one to back from a fight, Moxley and his Deathriders made their way to the ring. This was a perfectly laid setup, as FTR would jump Deathriders from behind.
It would seem FTR would get their revenge on Deathriders, until Marina Shafir joined the action, putting Cope in an awkward situation. This short distraction was enough for Deathriders to regain control until Powerhouse Hobbs came to the ring. Deathriders would take this moment to retreat as the segment ended.
The next match was a triple-threat to determine the number one spot in the Women’s Casino Gauntlet featuring Willow Nightingale, Kris Statlander, and Toni Storm. Statlander pinned Storm to earn the coveted number-one spot.
Huge Return On Dynamite
Kenny Omega would make his long-awaited return, and the mood was somber. It’s been over a year since he was hospitalized with diverticulitis. He would explain how he pushed his condition too far and the doctor said he may have saved his life, but there’s no guarantee he would be himself again, never mind get in the ring. Omega would explain he is lucky to be able to return to the ring again but warns his fans, he may not be the same wrestler he once was.
Don Callis was jumped by Omega when he tried to interrupt his promo. Callis doesn’t go far without his family, as Lance Archer, Brian Cage, and Kyle Fletcher come to his rescue. Will Ospreay slid into the ring after the faction jumped Omega. AEW Dynamite concluded with an interesting face-to-face between Ospreay and Omega.
