Wild First Half, Clutch Third Quarter Highlight Tight Matchup
Blue Cross TSAA Men’s State Basketball Tournament kicked off with a thrilling matchup between the Austin East Roadrunners and the undefeated Frederick Douglas Broncos. While Frederick Douglas emerged victorious with a final score of 72-49, the game unfolded in a series of exciting and momentum-shifting runs.
A Tale of Two Halves: Broncos Surge Early, Roadrunners Respond
The first quarter belonged to Frederick Douglas. Capitalizing on hot shooting (75%) and early foul trouble for Austin East’s star guard, the Broncos raced out to a 23-13 lead. The second quarter continued in similar fashion, with Frederick Douglas extending their lead to 15 points at halftime.
However, the tides began to turn in the third quarter. Austin East displayed remarkable resilience, embarking on a 10-0 run to open the period. Their defensive intensity increased dramatically, forcing turnovers and contested shots. This surge cut the deficit to a mere 3 points, electrifying the crowd. Frederick Douglas responded with a flurry of their own, but Austin East hung tough, keeping the score close entering the final frame.
Trapping Defense Leads Broncos to Victory
The fourth quarter proved decisive. Frederick Douglas’ trapping defense stifled Austin East’s offense, holding them scoreless for a crucial three-minute stretch. This allowed the Broncos to pad their lead, ultimately securing a convincing victory.
Roadrunners Look to the Future
Despite the loss, Austin East can take pride in their never-say-die attitude. Condis Cherry led the Roadrunners with 16 points, while Shane Cherry chipped in with 14 points, and Jaxon Young 5 points and 10 rebounds. This young team, returning a significant portion of its roster, will look to build on this experience for a return trip to the State Tournament next year.
Broncos Aim to Finish the Job
For Frederick Douglas, the win keeps their perfect season intact. Jarmon Brittman poured in a game-high 20 points, while Marjavis Chandler and Taquez Butler provided valuable contributions. The Broncos remain on a mission to capture the elusive state championship title after last year’s heartbreaking defeat. Their dominance throughout the season and this impressive opening round performance solidify them as a top contender.
