Swamp Rabbits Lose 5-1 to Iceman, Yet Win the Night

Tonight, at the Well the Greenville Swamp Rabbits faced off against the Jacksonville Iceman in a hockey game for the ages. Both teams came out slugging, you could tell they had something to prove, and at the end of the night, Jacksonville defeated Greenville 5-1. Yet, that wasn’t what had my attention during the game, it was what the night honored that made me proud to cover this game.

When I entered the doors at the well with the amazing crowd there to see the Rabbits play, the first thing I noticed was the night was really not about just hockey but Sticking It to Cancer. Fans was bidding on jerseys, doing raffles, playing games, superheroes everywhere taking pictures with kids, with proceeds going to fight cancer in our area. There was also honoring nurses and doctors who help patients fighting cancer being honored. Cancer survivors, all in the crowd with their stories being told how they had overcome the odds.

Plus, they honored a hometown hereo from the service in the crowd. The Swamp Rabbits organization did a smash up job making the game an encouragement for those fighting the hateful disease that has taken so many from us. So, when I say the game meant more to so many, and that the score wasn’t the main thought, you can see why.

yet, I must say the Swamp rabbits team gave a great effort in coming up with the 5-1 lose. Max Martin in the opening minutes scored first putting Greenville out in the lead 1-0, yet the Iceman came back to tie right before the end of the first period. The second half opened up to another goal by the Iceman and the goals kept coming from there as the Iceman sealed the game with an empty goal score.
