Paladins Rally Early, Battle Hard in 75‑71 OT Loss at ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — Furman’s men’s basketball team delivered one of its most competitive performances of the season Wednesday night, jumping out to an early lead and standing toe‑to‑toe with East Tennessee State before falling 75‑71 in overtime at Freedom Hall. In a matchup that many expected to be the most challenging of the weekend, Furman’s energy, execution and resilience made this game a contest worthy of its billing — one that didn’t fully settle until the final seconds of extra time. The Paladins came out with clear purpose, took early control with efficient offense, and matched ETSU’s physicality for much of the night. Even as the Buccaneers made adjustments and chipped into the lead, Furman stayed within striking distance and forced a tense overtime period that reflected just how closely matched these teams were.


Furman Starts Fast Behind Bowser, Wilkins

Furman’s early offensive rhythm set the tone for a competitive night. Cooper Bowser made his presence felt inside, scoring with consistency and attacking the basket in a way that helped the Paladins gather early momentum. Bowser finished with 18 points and eight rebounds, anchoring Furman’s physical play in the paint.

Playing with confidence and control, Alex Wilkins was a steady catalyst for the offense. Wilkins’ ability to drive, create his own shot and make plays for others kept Furman in position to lead for much of the first half and into the middle stages of the second. He finished with 19 points, one of his strongest scoring outings this season.

Charles Johnston provided energy and defensive intensity around the basket, contributing 11 points, six rebounds and a pair of blocks, helping to keep ETSU from gaining sustained advantage on the boards.

With those three leading the way, Furman’s opening surge felt like the kind of effort that could tilt the balance on the road — a sign of how this team can execute when its core players are engaged.

ETSU Responds, Sets Up Tight Second Half

But ETSU, buoyed by its home crowd and experience in close games, answered Furman’s early charge with a balanced offensive effort. Blake Barkley, who finished with 15 points, provided key baskets and late free throws that proved decisive in overtime. His ability to convert in pressure situations helped offset Furman’s defensive intensity.

Supporting Barkley were Brian Taylor II and Jordan McCullum, each contributing 14 points in a consistent scoring effort that allowed ETSU to stay within striking distance whenever Furman pushed ahead.

As the second half developed, momentum shifted multiple times. Each time Furman made a run, ETSU found a response; each time ETSU gained a slight edge, Furman answered with a timely bucket or defensive stand. That ebb‑and‑flow set the stage for a closely contested finish.


Overtime Falls Just Short

Regulation ended without a decisive edge for either squad, and overtime became necessary. In the extra period, ETSU’s ability to convert key free throws and manage possession proved the difference in a tight stretch of play. Furman continued to fight — attacking the rim, contesting shots and battling on the glass — but a few possessions where the offense stalled just long enough allowed ETSU to maintain a narrow advantage.

When the final horn sounded, the 75‑71 scoreline reflected not just the result but the competitiveness of two teams that matched each other on effort, execution and pressure in every phase of the game.


Takeaways for Furman

Although this was a loss on the road, it was far from a quiet performance. Furman showed that it can start fast, generate offense in multiple ways and respond under pressure against a top conference opponent. Bowser, Wilkins and Johnston all produced nights that reflected both individual capability and collective determination.

The Paladins repeatedly challenged ETSU’s adjustments, forced defensive rotations and created opportunities on the offensive end. That level of play — particularly away from home — reinforces the belief within the program that Furman is capable of competing with the league’s best.

As the Paladins turn their focus back to SoCon play in Greenville, this game provides a clear example of the level of consistency and execution needed to finish the season strong. Furman didn’t just show up — it competed throughout, pushing one of the league’s top teams into overtime and showing the kind of resilience that can carry into the final weeks of the regular season.
