Where Legacy Still Leads the Way

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Few institutions carry the weight of history, culture, and pride quite like Howard University. Founded in 1867, it has stood as a cornerstone of Black excellence — not just in academics, but in sports, music, and national influence.

That sense of purpose runs through every Howard Bison jersey, drumline cadence, and cheer echoing across campus. Whether on the gridiron at Greene Stadium or on the hardwood inside Burr Gymnasium, Howard’s athletes and artists alike perform with the same unshakable energy that defines “The Mecca.”

As the 2025 football season unfolds and basketball season nears tipoff, Howard continues to embody the dual spirit of competition and community that makes HBCU athletics so powerful.

Football: Battling Through the Middle of the Pack

Howard’s football program is among the oldest in Black college sports, dating back to 1893. Generations later, the Bison remain a respected force in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) — with a proud championship pedigree and a reputation for developing resilient talent.

This fall, the Bison sit at 4–4 overall (2–1 in MEAC play), reflecting a season of both promise and frustration. Under head coach Larry Scott, Howard has shown flashes of brilliance — balanced offense, opportunistic defense — but also inconsistency in key moments that have cost close games.

Senior wide receiver Andre Cooper II has been the anchor of the passing game, providing reliability and leadership on and off the field. Kaden Cobb, a junior known for his versatility, continues to evolve into a dual-threat presence, while graduate safety Masiah Thorne leads the defense with discipline and confidence.

The Bison’s best moments this season have come when experience meets energy — when veterans set the tone early and younger players feed off the momentum. Even in the face of setbacks, the fight remains visible. That grit has long been the program’s identity: never out of a game, never out of belief.

Basketball: Blakeney’s Blueprint for Sustained Success

If football has been a season of tests, Howard basketball represents a program in bloom. Under head coach Kenneth Blakeney, a former Duke standout who understands both the strategy and symbolism of HBCU athletics, the Bison have turned into consistent contenders.

After capturing a MEAC Tournament title and making an NCAA Tournament appearance in recent years, the Bison enter the 2025–26 campaign with confidence. Veterans Ose Okojie and Ed Holland III return to lead a backcourt that blends poise with defensive toughness, while sophomore forward Travelle Bryson adds athleticism and interior strength.

Blakeney’s approach — blending discipline, culture, and style — has attracted recruits who value more than just exposure. At Howard, the emphasis is on belonging to something bigger. Each win carries symbolic weight, representing progress for both the program and the broader HBCU basketball landscape.

The Showtime Marching Band: The Heartbeat of Howard

Ask any Howard alum what defines Homecoming, and their answer is likely the same — The Showtime Marching Band.

Known for its precision, pageantry, and soul, the band is more than halftime entertainment; it’s the school’s cultural heartbeat. Every game day, their booming brass and synchronized choreography turn Greene Stadium into an event that feels part concert, part movement.

“The Showtime Band represents our pride,” one alum once said. “They tell our story with every note.”

Whether performing in the streets of D.C. or at national showcases, the band embodies the artistry and excellence that extend far beyond the field. It’s the unifying sound of The Mecca — the pulse that brings generations together.

Howard’s Standard Never Changes

Through every season, record, or transition, Howard University’s foundation remains unchanged: excellence is the expectation.

The football team continues to compete with heart despite the bumps of a .500 campaign. The basketball team eyes another MEAC title run under a coach who understands both history and the future. And the Showtime Marching Band ensures that no matter the scoreboard, the spirit of Howard never dims.

From the roar of Greene Stadium to the rhythm of the drumline, The Mecca’s influence is as alive as ever — a living symbol of what it means to lead, uplift, and inspire through HBCU sports.

Closing Thoughts

In every snap, basket, and drumbeat, Howard University continues to carry the legacy of those who built The Mecca generations ago. The Bison aren’t just competing for wins — they’re representing a culture, a community, and a history that runs deeper than any scoreboard. As 2025 unfolds, their fight, rhythm, and pride remind the world why Howard remains the heart of HBCU athletics.
