Catamount Football Hosts Furman Paladins

Taron Dickens looks to follow-up on his record-breaking performance as he leads WCU football against the Furman Paladins at 2:30pm EST on Saturday in Cullowhee. The Paladins football team brings a 4-1 record and a very solid football team to Whitmer Stadium to take on the Catamounts. Furman is currently tied with the Catamounts for 2nd in the SoCon standings, behind only Mercer, who holds a 4-0 conference record. Furman quarterback Trey Hedden is also one of the more efficient passers in the country, holding a 72.2 completion percentage, and has only thrown 3 interceptions on the year. The Furman offense averages 31 points per game, while the defense only allows 23.8. The Paladins are a very all around strong football team, with their only loss coming against currently undefeated Presbyterian by only one point. Speaking of points, lets talk about this WCU offense.

Taron Dickens just broke the NCAA record for most consecutive completions. Western Carolina boasts the 10th best offense in the FCS, James Tyre seems to have an incredible connection with his quarterback, and Patrick Boyd Jr. continues to lead the way for the Catamounts on the ground. If the defense can improve on its rather stiff 21 point performance against Wofford, Western should be in a strong position to vanquish the Dins on Saturday. The keys to this game are the same as they’ve been all season. The defense needs to create turnovers to ensure that the WCU offense gets the ball as much as possible. The Paladins scored less than 28 points in a game only once this season, while the WCU defense has given up less than 35 points only once. This could very easily turn into a shootout.

I will be on-campus this weekend to cover the game, and I look forward to meeting as many Catamount fans as I can. See you Saturday at Whitmer Stadium.
