0 Gamecocks Fall Short in Mayor’s Cup Clash
South Carolina had chances to shift momentum in a primetime SEC rivalry game, but Missouri pulled away late to reclaim the Mayor’s Cup with a 29-20 win Saturday night in Columbia, Mo. Sellers steadied the Gamecocks with a field-goal drive to retake the lead, 20-18, heading into the fourth quarter. Penalties crept in again, extending one Missouri drive and chewing up clock, but the game still felt within South Carolina’s grasp.
4th Quarter: Tigers Take Control Late
Missouri’s ground game took over in the final period. Jamal Roberts powered in from 16 yards out, and a successful two-point conversion made it 26-20. From there, South Carolina’s offense stalled against a relentless pass rush. A false start and a delay of game buried one late drive, and Missouri added a 40-yard field goal in the closing minutes to seal the Mayor’s Cup victory.
Beamer: “We’ve Got to Be Cleaner”
Head coach Shane Beamer didn’t shy away from the factors that swung the outcome. “When you get outrushed 285 to minus-nine, you’re not going to win in this league,” he said. On the penalties, Beamer added, “We’ve got to be cleaner. Some of those pre-snap mistakes are things we can fix, and we will.”

The redshirt freshman finished with 302 passing yards and two touchdowns, showing poise in the pocket and resilience against Missouri’s constant pressure. His ability to extend plays and connect deep with receivers like Jacobs kept the Gamecocks alive deep into the fourth quarter. For South Carolina to turn its season around, Sellers will remain the centerpiece of the offense.
