Gamecocks Fall Short in Mayor’s Cup Clash
South Carolina had chances to shift momentum in a primetime SEC rivalry game, but Missouri pulled away late to reclaim the Mayor’s Cup with a 29-20 win Saturday night in Columbia, Mo. Quarterback LaNorris Sellers threw for more than 300 yards and two touchdowns, flashing the poise of a leader still learning on the fly. Yet the Gamecocks were limited to negative rushing yards, pressured heavily up front, and flagged at key moments that tilted the game away from them.
1st Quarter: Slow Burn on the Road
Both defenses set the tone early. South Carolina moved the ball between the 20s but a couple of pre-snap flags disrupted rhythm, and Missouri’s early drives ended without points. The scoreboard read 0-0 after one, but it was clear the margin for error would be slim in what felt like a grind-it-out SEC rivalry battle.
2nd Quarter: Sellers’ Sparks and Back-and-Forth Drama
The second quarter provided the fireworks. Missouri opened with a 99-yard touchdown drive, though a missed extra point left the Tigers up 6-0. Sellers responded immediately, finding Vandrevius Jacobs on a 49-yard strike to put Carolina ahead. Later in the quarter, Sellers hit Brian Rowe Jr. for a touchdown, part of a half where he showed command despite heavy pressure. Missouri tacked on two field goals, but South Carolina still took a 14-12 halftime lead.
3rd Quarter: Missouri Punches Back
Momentum shifted after halftime. Missouri tied the game with a field goal, then leaned on running back Ahmad Hardy, who broke tackles on a 5-yard touchdown run to put the Tigers up 18-17. Sellers steadied the Gamecocks with a field-goal drive to retake the lead, 20-18, heading into the fourth quarter. Penalties crept in again, extending one Missouri drive and chewing up clock, but the game still felt within South Carolina’s grasp.
4th Quarter: Tigers Take Control Late
Missouri’s ground game took over in the final period. Jamal Roberts powered in from 16 yards out, and a successful two-point conversion made it 26-20. From there, South Carolina’s offense stalled against a relentless pass rush. A false start and a delay of game buried one late drive, and Missouri added a 40-yard field goal in the closing minutes to seal the Mayor’s Cup victory.
Beamer: “We’ve Got to Be Cleaner”
Head coach Shane Beamer didn’t shy away from the factors that swung the outcome. “When you get outrushed 285 to minus-nine, you’re not going to win in this league,” he said. On the penalties, Beamer added, “We’ve got to be cleaner. Some of those pre-snap mistakes are things we can fix, and we will.”
Player of the Game: LaNorris Sellers
Even in defeat, Sellers continues to look like the present and future of South Carolina football. The redshirt freshman finished with 302 passing yards and two touchdowns, showing poise in the pocket and resilience against Missouri’s constant pressure. His ability to extend plays and connect deep with receivers like Jacobs kept the Gamecocks alive deep into the fourth quarter. For South Carolina to turn its season around, Sellers will remain the centerpiece of the offense.
What’s Next for the Gamecocks
Despite the loss, Sellers’ growth and the emergence of young playmakers on the outside are positives for a team that must now regroup. The Gamecocks return home next week looking to secure their first SEC victory, with an emphasis on cleaning up penalties and finding answers in the running game before the schedule stiffens further.
