Final: NC State 89 Coastal Carolina 68
Raleigh, NC-The #18/#20 Wolfpack women’s basketball team returned home on Thursday night to host the undefeated Chanticleers from Coastal Carolina in an exciting mid-week matchup. The Chanticleers (4-1, 0-0) came in at 4-0 on the season and were looking for their first win against the Wolfpack in the series. The Wolfpack (2-2,0-0) returned to Reynolds Coliseum fresh off a tough loss on the road to the Horned Frogs in Fort Worth.
1st Quarter NC State 23 Coastal Carolina 17
The Wolfpack came out hot before the first media timeout taking an early 17-14 lead. The Wolfpack were led by the hot shooting of Madison Hayes as she led the team with 6 early points. Aziaha James and Lorena Awou led the way on the boards with 4 each early on as the Wolfpack were able to take the 23-17 lead after the quarter.
The Wolfpack finished the quarter shooting 52.6% from the field and 2-4 from beyond the arc to pace the NC State offensive attack. Madison Hayes would finish the quarter with 11 points. Savannah Brooks would lead the way for the Chanticleers as she notched 9 points and 2 rebounds. Coastal Carolina would finish the half shooting just 31.3% but were 4-9 from 3 good for 44.4% allowing the Chanticleers to keep it close
2nd Quarter NC State 47 Coastal Carolina 36
Coastal Carolina would continue its hot shooting early in the 2nd quarter as they closed the lead briefly 32-29 before the Wolfpack would use a 6-0 run to quickly force a Coastal Carolina timeout with the Wolfpack leading 38-29. Back-to-back three-point baskets from Zoe Brooks and Devyn Quigley were the cause of the run and Tilda Trygger would push the lead up to 11 with the score 40-29 and ultimately would end the quarter with a 47-36 lead.
Devyn Quigley and Tilda Trygger would lead the Pack in the 2nd quarter scoring. Quigley had 5 in the quarter and Trygger had 4. Madison Hayes would continue her torrid half as she knocked down her third three of the game giving her 14 for the half to lead all scorers. NC State would end the quarter shooting 62.5% from the field and 4-9 from 3.
Savannah Brooks tried to keep the Chanticleers close as she finished the half with 17 points of her own including 2-4 from beyond the 3-point line. NC State found it difficult to keep her in check throughout the quarter. Brooks also finished the half with 2 rebounds and an assist. The Chanticleers would finish the half shooting 31.4% from the field and 37.5% on 6-16 shooting from 3.
3rd Quarter NC State 67 Coastal Carolina 48
The Wolfpack would maintain their 11-point lead at the under 5 media timeout. Aziaha James would lead the Pack for the quarter as she put up double figures on her way to 14 points. Lorena Awou would continue her strong performance on the boards as well for NC State finishing the quarter with 9 rebounds in the game. The lead would swell to 18 with 2:13 left in the quarter as NC State would force a Chanticleers timeout after a quick 7-0 run midway through the quarter.
With the Wolfpack ratcheting up its defense, the Chanticleers found themselves in a hole too large to dig out of. Savannah Brooks was held scoreless in the 3rd quarter after her hot first half. The Wolfpack were able to bottle up the Chanticleers leading scorer as Brooks was held to 0-4 shooting in the quarter. NC State would close out the quarter on an 8-0 run pushing the lead to 19 at 67-48. Aziaha James would finish the quarter with 21 total points as well to pace the Pack.
4th Quarter NC State 89 Coastal Carolina 68
NC State would balloon the lead to 24 as Quigley and Zamareya Jones would nail back-to-back 3’s again forcing a quick timeout by Coastal Carolina with the score 77-53. Devan Quigley would pace NC State for the quarter with 15 points and would finish with 20 for the game. She would also chip in 6 boards and 4 assists to go with her 20 points. She would finish 2nd in scoring behind teammate Aziaha James who would finish the game with her 3rd consecutive 20-point game. James’ 21 points were good for the second most among all scorers.
NC State would earn their 3rd win of the season as they look to head to the Bahamas on a high note. Next up for the Wolfpack is a matchup in the Bahamas against Southern. The winner of that game will play the winner of LSU/Washington State.
