Zebulon, NC- The Carolina Mudcats (30-23) played host to the Augusta Fireflies (15-36) in a Sunday afternoon contest. The Mudcats entered today 2.5 games back of the Fredericksburg Nationals (33-21). The Mudcats sent Anthony Flores (2-0) to the mound who entered tonight with a 1.29 ERA in 14.0 innings pitched. The Green Jackets sent Jacob Shafer (0-1) to the mound who entered tonight with a 3.18 ERA in 5.2 innings pitched.
The GreenJackets struck in the top of the 2nd with a no doubt home run to right field by Titus Dumitru which gave Augusta a 1-0 lead. Augusta scored again in the top of the 3rd when 2 runs scored on a ground ball up the middle by Junior Garcia which increased the lead to 3-0. The Mudcats responded in the bottom half when Miguel Briceno scored on a single to right field by Eric Bitonti which cut the deficit to 3-1.
Jacob Shafer pitched 3.1 innings where he allowed 1 unearned run on 3 hits.
The Mudcats scored in the bottom of the 5th when Blayberg Diaz scored on a single to right by Eric Bitonti which cut the deficit to 3-2. Then, Yophery Rodriguez scored on a wild pitch that tied the game at 3-3. Then, Eric Bitonti scored on a wild pitch which gave the Mudcats a 4-3 lead. Then, 2 runs scored on a double to right center field by Luis Castillo which increased the Mudcats lead to 6-3. Then, Luis Castillo scored on a single to right by Daniel Guilarte which increased the Mudcats lead to 7-3.
Harrison Durow threw 2 scoreless innings where he allowed 0 hits.
Augusta scored in the top of the 8th when John Gil scored on a single to center by Junior Garcia which cut the deficit to 7-4. Then, Colby Jones scored on a 4-6-3 double play by Titus Dumitru which cut the deficit to 7-5. The Mudcats shut down the GreenJackets in the top of the 9th as they earned the 7-5 win.
Albert Rivas threw 1 scoreless inning where he faced the minimum. Dikember Sanchez threw 1 scoreless inning where he only allowed 1 hit by pitch.
The winning pitcher for the Mudcats was Anthony Flores with his 5 innings where he allowed 3 runs on 4 hits. The losing pitcher was Kadon Morton for his 1 inning where he allowed 5 runs on 3 hits. The save went to Dikember Sanchez for his 1 inning performance. The Mudcats are back in action on Tuesday in Lynchburg to start their 6 game series with the Lynchburg Hillcats.
