Augusta GreenJackets
COLUMBIA, SC: For the first time this year, the Augusta GreenJackets (62-52, 27-21) swept a doubleheader, working a 5-3 comeback win in game one before stifling the Columbia Fireflies (56-58, 22-26) 3-0 to take two wins in one day Tuesday night.

Both games were defined by brilliant starting pitching, with Derek Vartanian powering through seven quality innings in game one. Vartanian worked through a three-run second, capped by a two-run single from Ricson Gonzalez, but did not blink after as he posted his team-high seventh quality start of the year. Vartanian retired the final seventeen batters he faced and struck out seven in his fourth win of the year.
That works just fine!

Despite a series of early hits, Augusta was unable to close the gap early against Shane Van Dam. The Jackets opened the scoring via an RBI double from Tanner Smith in the first, and saw Manuel Campos hit his first Single-A homer but still trailed entering the penultimate inning of regulation.

Augusta finally tied the game in the 6th, manufacturing a run thanks to some Firefly help. Matt Scannell began the inning with a single, took second on an error, then stole third and dashed home on a wild pitch. Two innings later, Augusta grabbed the win in extras, scoring two runs without a hit in the top half of the 8th before Lewis Sifontes closed out the game with a hitless bottom half.

In game two, it was all about Daniel Brooks, who was dominant beyond compare in his first professional start. Though Brooks’ streak of consecutive outs died at 25, he continued to post zeroes and tossed five shutout frames with ease. Brooks also recorded 10 strikeouts, the most by a GreenJacket pitcher in one game this year.

The Jackets’ offense in game two was methodical early, doing enough to support Brooks’ brilliance against starter Michael Braswell. Cooper McMurray opened the scoring in the first with a sacrifice fly and posted the team’s final run in the third the exact same way. Sandwiched in between was an RBI triple from Parker Brosius, his first at the professional level.
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT.

The GreenJackets have now won four straight games and have taken each of the first two games in the seven-game series. A win tomorrow would tie the longest win streak of the season, with Yander Pinero making his first Single-A start as he attempts to match the dominance of the previous few games.
