The reigning SoCon Champions #2 Furman Paladins and the #16 High Point Panthers started off their seasons in an exhibition match at Stone stadium today in front of a great crowd. The Paladins start the year off with first year head coach Brandon Tucker, and a great crop of top players in the country.
The Paladins return all 11 starters from last season’s team that posted a 16-2-5 record, earned the school’s first appearance in the NCAA College Cup, claimed the Southern Conference regular season and tournament titles, and finished No. 3 in last season’s final United Soccer Coaches poll. The list of returnees includes SoCon Player of the Year and first team All-American Diego Hernandez, SoCon Freshman of the Year and freshman All-American Braden Dunham, and SoCon Goalkeeper of the Year Ivan Horvat.
High Point, which is ranked No. 16 in the coaches’ poll and No. 9 in the Top-Drawer preseason poll are one of the toughest teams in the country and was in last year’s playoffs.
The teams are playing a 3-period format, and with the first period, both teams are shut out with the game showing the strong defense on both sides including at goal. The second period we have a host of changes at goal and on the pitch. The Paladins have one of the deepest and proven Goalie staffs in the country with Senior Aaron Salinas returning after a injury kept him away from playing last year. They also return last year’s top goalie red shirt Sophomore Ivan Horvat who helped lead the Paladins to the Final 4 in Soccer.
High Point gets the first goal ast 11:41 mark when #27 gets the shot past Hovart to make it 1-0. The game will end in a 1-0 High Point win.
