Tar Heels Cap Huge Week With #2 Upset
The Tar Heels went 3-1 at the Bosh this week including a 2-1 series upset win over the #2 ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The Heels began the week with a 14-5 win over in-state for UNCW. Carolina then held the best offense in the country to just six runs across eighteen innings. The Diamond Heels would get the win on both Friday and Saturday to secure the series victory in front of the largest regular season crowd in Boshamer Stadium history.

Jackson Rose got the start on Tuesday for the Diamond Heels against the Seahawks from Wilmington. The Hels plated five runs in the first, including a Cooper Nicholson home run. The Seahawks picked up a run in the second, but the Heels added two more of their own. Carolina added one run each in the fifth and sixth to make it 9-1 Tar Heels. The Seahawks put up four runs in the seventh to make it 9-5, but Carolina shut the door with five more in the eighth to secure the victory. Jackson rose moves to 3-0 on the season after five innings of work and the Heels win it 14-5.
Game One
Jason Decaro got the start to open the series against #2 ranked Yellow Jackets Friday night at the Bosh. This one was all Carolina in short order. The Tar Heels had three runs in the first, one in the second, and one in the third to take a 5-0 lead. Georgia Tech would pick up one run in the sixth and one in the eighth. However, an excellent performance from the Carolina Arm Barn would slam this one shut. Decaro, Glauber, and Mcduffie combined for seven strikeouts across nine innings of play. Decaro Gets the win and moves to 6-2 overall on the year.
Game Two
Ryan Lynch got his usual game two start on Saturday afternoon for the Diamond Heels. Everything about the gameplan approach by the Heels signaled aggression and intent to win the series before Sunday. Hitters were more aggressive in their swings. Coach FOrbes was more aggressive on the basepaths and with the pitcher usage. And it worked. Carolina Opened up with three runs in the first and four runs in the second to take a commanding 7-0 lead over the Yellow Jackets.
Georgia Tech would put up a run in the fourth, but Carolina responded with three more runs of their own. Georgia Tech would pick up two more in the fifth and one in the sixth. Carolina would plate a run in the seventh and then three more in the eighth. This would give the Tar Heels a 14-4 run-rule victory over the Yellow Jackets. This was Georgia Tech’s first run-rule loss of the season. Ryan Lynch gets the win and moves to 3-3 overall this season.
Game Three
Folger Boaz once again got the start for Carolina in the Sunday game three spot in the rotation. The Heels were looking for a sweep to take control of 1st place in the ACC standings, but it wasn’t meant to be. The two teams traded one run apiece in the first.
However, the Ramblin Wreck would break it open with three runs in the third to make it a 4-1 ballgame. The Diamond Heels would respond with one run of their own in the third to make it 4-2. An RBI double in the fifth made it 5-2 Georgia Tech and that was it. The Heels just never could close the gap. Boaz picks up his first loss on the season and falls to 3-1 overall.
Moving Forward
This was an absolutely massive series for the UNC baseball program this weekend, and this team certainly responded. With the 2006 team in the house, the 2026 played up to their level. The Tar Heels stil sit in 2nd place in the ACC standings, just one game back from Georgia Tech. However, the Heels only sit one game ahead of Boston College and a game and a half ahead of Florida State.
Up next, the Diamond Heels host High Point in Chapel Hill at Boshamer Stadium on Tuesday night at 6pm on ACCNX. Next weekend, the Tar Heels travel across town to Durham to take on arch-rival Duke Blue Devils. However, the Games are shifted forward a day this week. Game one is Thursday at 7pm, game two is Friday at 6pm, and game three is Saturday at 3pm. All thre games will be on the ACC network.
