BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The High Point University men’s basketball team is fourth in the country in points per game for a reason.

On Saturday afternoon, the Panthers tallied their second-most points ever against a Big South opponent in an 112-87 victory against Gardner-Webb, extending HPU’s win streak to eight games, tying its largest streak of the season.

For the third time in four games, Rob Martin tallied at least 20 points, finishing with a game-high 21 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field. It was a balanced scoring track as six other Panthers finished in double-figure scoring, with Terry Anderson adding 17 points on 9-of-9 free throws, Cam’Ron Fletcher recorded 13 points and six rebounds, Owen Aquino poured in 11 points, nine rebounds and tied a season-high with four blocks. Conrad Martinez, Scotty Washington and Vincent Brady II each chipped in with 10 points.

Head Coach Flynn Clayman: “Good to get another road win, but I wasn’t proud of our performance today. The scoreboard says a 25-point win, but our effort was nowhere close to our standard. On a positive note, our guys have been in extra time to make more open shots, and we are seeing that work pay off.”

The Panthers showcased their 3-point shooting ability to start the game as triples from Aquino, Washington and Martin gave HPU an early 9-5 lead. HPU continued its elite shooting from beyond the arc, knocking down 3-pointers on three consecutive possessions from Fletcher, Aquino and Brady II as the Panthers grabbed their largest lead of the game, 25-9.

In the final 9:04 of the first half, HPU converted all seven of its free throws, helping the Panthers head into halftime with a 48-37 advantage. High Point was tremendous at the charity stripe in the first half, converting 13-of-15 attempts. The Panthers also shot 50 percent from the field and 38.9 percent from the 3-point line in the first half.

Terry Anderson was the team’s only player in double-figure scoring with 11 points, converting all seven of his attempts at the free-throw line. Martin added eight points, Fletcher contributed with seven, and Martinez and Aquino each chipped in with six points in the first half.

After not scoring a basket in the first half, Braden Hausen made an immediate impact out of halftime, grabbing a steal that resulted in a Martin layup, converting a 3-point play and knocking down a pair of triples, extending the Panthers’ lead to their largest of the game, 20 points, 63-43, with 17:17 remaining.

A 10-1 scoring drive from the Panthers was capped off by Anderson throwing down a one-handed jam as HPU continued its 20-point advantage, 73-50.

Chase Johnston found his shooting stroke, splashing a pair of 3-pointers for his 400th career 3-pointer and the team’s 10th and 11th triples of the game, marking the 15th game this season that the Panthers have recorded 10 3-pointers. The triples helped HPU get out to an 85-65 lead. Johnston became the 30th player in college basketball to reach 400 career threes.

A second-chance opportunity by Washington was converted for an and-one, 3-point play, pushing HPU past the 100-point mark for the fifth time this season, and first time since HPU’s last contest against the Runnin’ Bulldogs on Jan. 7.

Brady II and Johnston drained a pair of 3-pointers in the final 2:12 to seal the 112-87 victory for the Panthers seventh straight win against Gardner-Webb.

The Panthers shot 54.8 percent from the field for the best mark since HPU’s conference opener against UNC Asheville on Dec. 31. The 14 made 3-pointers tied the second-most HPU has converted this season. High Point also knocked in 26-of-29 attempts at the charity stripe or 89.7 percent, marking High Point’s best percentage all season.

Up Next:
The Panthers return to the Qubein Center on Thursday, February 19, for a matchup against UNC Asheville at 7 p.m. The game will be aired on ESPNU as part of the Big South Wildcard broadcast.
