CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The High Point University men’s lacrosse team traveled to in-state foe No. 6 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Friday night for a non-conference matchup. The Panthers fell to the Tar Heels 20-9.

Site: Dorrance Field
Score: High Point 9, No. 6 UNC 20
Records: High Point (1-1), No. 6 UNC (2-0)

After going down 3-0 in the first nine minutes, Ryan Hynes put the Panthers on the board with an unassisted goal at the 5:45 mark. HPU trailed 5-1 at the end of the first.

Opening up the second quarter, Ian Cann found Owen Bunten for a rip into the back of the net to stay within three goals, 5-2. UNC hit a hot streak and scored seven straight goals before the end of the first half to lead 12-2 at the break.

The Panthers struck first to start the second half which led to HPU out scoring UNC 5-4 in the third quarter. Carson Robins threw in his first goal of the game at the 13:06 mark off a pass from Collin Rovere. Hynes drilled in his second goal of the game just two minutes later to make it 12-4.

The Tar Heels stopped HPU’s momentum and answered with three straight goals. High Point continued to battle on the offense and managed to throw in three goals before the end of the quarter. Justin Wixted, Bunten and Rovere each contributed to the three goals, scoring one in a man-up situation. HPU trailed 16-7 at the end of the third.

Robins and Cann knocked in goals in the fourth quarter but it was not enough to close the gap. The Panthers fell 20-9 in the end.

Robins, Bunten and Hynes each led with two goals a piece while Wixted and Rovere each dished out two assists.
