Key Takeaways

  • The Ravens beat the Cowboys 34-31 on a 56-yard buzzer-beater in the first regular-season NFL game in Rio de Janeiro.
  • Jahmyr Gibbs became the first player in NFL history to reach 300 rushing yards, four rushing touchdowns, 150 receiving yards and multiple receiving touchdowns in the first three games of a season.
  • Aaron Rodgers tied Ben Roethlisberger for fifth on the all-time regular-season wins list.
  • Patrick Mahomes tied Tom Brady for the most wins by a quarterback through his first 150 career starts.
  • Washington became the first 0-2 team to beat the reigning Super Bowl champion in Week 3 since 1980.

The Big Picture: A Week Built on Tight Finishes

Twelve of the 14 games played so far (86%) were within one score in the fourth quarter. Eleven of 14 (79%) were decided by eight points or fewer.

Five teams (Baltimore, Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis and Pittsburgh) scored the winning points inside the final three minutes. Baltimore, Buffalo and Las Vegas each erased a deficit of 10 or more points.

Buffalo, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Minnesota and San Francisco are all 3-0. Atlanta, Indianapolis and Washington picked up their first wins.

The Commanders’ 33-31 victory over Seattle is the headline upset. It is the first time an 0-2 team has knocked off the defending champs in Week 3 since Cincinnati beat Pittsburgh in 1980.

Ravens Beat Cowboys in Rio on a Last-Second Kick

Tyler Loop’s 56-yard field goal as time expired gave Baltimore a 34-31 win over Dallas in the first regular-season game ever played in Rio de Janeiro.

Derrick Henry added two rushing touchdowns and moved into a tie-free third place on the NFL’s all-time rushing touchdown list, including the postseason. His 135 career scores pass Hall of Famer Marcus Allen (134). Only Emmitt Smith (183) and LaDainian Tomlinson (151) are ahead of him.

Aaron Rodgers Keeps Climbing the All-Time Lists

Rodgers threw for 292 yards and three touchdowns in Pittsburgh’s 30-27 win over Cincinnati, finishing with a 101.6 passer rating.

The win was his 165th in the regular season, matching Roethlisberger for fifth all time. Only Tom Brady (251), Brett Favre (186), Peyton Manning (186) and Drew Brees (172) have more.

He also passed Brees for second place in games with three or more touchdown passes and a passer rating of 100 or better. Rodgers has 81 such games. Brees has 80, and Brady leads with 91.

Patrick Mahomes Ties Tom Brady

In his 150th career start, including the postseason, Mahomes threw for 246 yards and two touchdowns (119.8 rating) as Kansas City beat Miami 24-10. It was his 115th win, tying Brady for the most by a quarterback through his first 150 starts.

Mahomes also passed Manning for second place among quarterbacks in career multi-touchdown-pass games through their first 10 seasons. He has 97, and only Russell Wilson (100) has more.

Running back Kenneth Walker also made history. He scored once rushing and once receiving, making him the first player ever to do that in two of his first three games with a team.

Allen ran for two touchdowns in Buffalo’s 24-16 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, and linebacker Greg Rousseau added two sacks.

Allen is the first quarterback in NFL history with multiple rushing touchdowns in three consecutive games. He has six rushing scores this season, making him the fourth player ever with six or more in nine straight seasons. The others are Marshall Faulk and LaDainian Tomlinson (10 each) and Jim Brown (nine).

Rousseau joined Mark Gastineau (1984) and Kevin Greene (1998) as the only players since sacks became official in 1982 with two or more sacks in each of his team’s first three games.

Jahmyr Gibbs Is Off to a Historic Start

Gibbs was the best player on the field in Detroit’s 31-24 win over the New York Jets. He finished with 164 scrimmage yards (99 rushing, 65 receiving) and three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving). Teammate Amon-Ra St. Brown scored his fifth touchdown catch of the year.

Gibbs’ Record-Book Moments

  • First in NFL history with four games featuring multiple rushing touchdowns and a receiving touchdown in his first four seasons
  • First in NFL history with 300+ rushing yards, four rushing touchdowns, 150+ receiving yards and multiple receiving touchdowns in his first three games of a season
  • Tied for the most games with two or more rushing touchdowns by a player under 25 (13), matching Jim Brown, Todd Gurley and Clinton Portis
  • Fourth player ever with at least 150 scrimmage yards and three touchdowns in four games during his first four seasons, joining Cloyce Box, Jim Brown and Larry Johnson

Season totals: 463 scrimmage yards (307 rushing, 156 receiving) and six touchdowns (four rushing, two receiving).

.@Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs has produced 4 games with at 2+ rushing TDs & 1+ receiving TD in his career.

This ties for the 3rd-most games with 2+ rushing & 1+ receiving TDs in @NFL history. The #NFL record of 5 such games is shared by Jim Brown and Marshall Faulk.#OnePride pic.twitter.com/wpUtxkELqn

Gibbs and St. Brown also tied Thurman Thomas and Andre Reed for the fourth-most games in NFL history in which a running back and wide receiver teammate both scored. They have 23. Only Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin (32), Lenny Moore and Raymond Berry (31) and Edgerrin James and Marvin Harrison (25) have more.

Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase Hit New Milestones

Burrow threw three touchdown passes in Cincinnati’s loss at Pittsburgh, one of them to Chase. It was his 30th career game with three or more touchdown passes. That ties Favre and Dak Prescott for fourth most through a player’s first seven seasons, behind Dan Marino (42), Mahomes (38) and Manning (32).

Chase, meanwhile, reached 7,000 career receiving yards in his 81st game, the fourth-fastest in NFL history. Only Lance Alworth and Julio Jones (72 games each) and Justin Jefferson (73) got there sooner. His 57 career touchdown catches also passed Dez Bryant for fourth most by a player under 27, behind Randy Moss (77), Rob Gronkowski (65) and Larry Fitzgerald (59).

Jaxon Smith-Njigba Is Off to an All-Time Start

Seattle’s receiver had 10 catches for 128 yards and two touchdowns at Washington. It wasn’t enough for the win, but it added to a remarkable start.

  • The fourth player in the Super Bowl era with six touchdown catches in his first three games of a season, joining Calvin Johnson (2011), Marvin Harrison (1999) and Daryl Turner (1985)
  • The second player in NFL history with 25+ catches, 400+ yards and six touchdown catches through three games, joining Harrison (1999)
  • The second player ever with 120+ receiving yards and a touchdown in each of his team’s first three games, joining Jerry Rice (1989)

Jaxon Smith-Njigba is on a RECORD PACE that the NFL has never before seen — 2,295 receiving yards is his current trajectory 🔥

One More Note: Saints Tight Ends Score Twice Each

New Orleans tight ends Noah Fant and Juwan Johnson each caught two touchdown passes. They are the second pair of tight end teammates in NFL history to each score multiple receiving touchdowns in the same game. The first were Oakland’s Jeremy Brigham and Rickey Dudley on Dec. 24, 2000.
