Chaos Reigns Across the Country, Week 2 College Football Recap

Week 2 of the college football season delivered everything fans could have asked for.

A top-ranked team blew a 20-point lead. A program coming off a 1-11 season stunned a top-six opponent. Michigan knocked off Oklahoma in a defensive battle, while several other national contenders continued to establish themselves as legitimate College Football Playoff threats.

By the time Saturday night came to a close, the national landscape looked considerably different than it did entering the weekend.

Biggest Game: Texas Completes Stunning Comeback

The marquee matchup of the weekend lived up to its billing — and then some.

No. 4 Texas erased a 20-point deficit against No. 1 Ohio State, rallying from a 23-3 hole to defeat the Buckeyes 24-23 in Austin.

Ohio State controlled virtually the entire first three quarters, but Texas found another gear in the fourth. Arch Manning helped lead three touchdown drives, and Hollywood Smothers completed the comeback with a 1-yard touchdown run with just 25 seconds remaining.

Manning finished with 195 passing yards and a touchdown, while Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin threw for 278 yards. Jeremiah Smith also delivered a huge performance for the Buckeyes, catching eight passes for 164 yards and a touchdown.

The comeback was historic, marking the largest fourth-quarter comeback against an AP No. 1 team.

For Texas, it was more than just an early-season victory. The Longhorns demonstrated the ability to survive an elite opponent even after playing poorly for much of the afternoon.

For Ohio State, the loss immediately creates questions about how the Buckeyes respond after holding a commanding lead and failing to close the game.

Biggest Winner: Oklahoma State

If there was one program that completely changed its trajectory in a single afternoon, it was Oklahoma State.

The Cowboys entered Saturday coming off a 1-11 season and a 24-10 loss to Tulsa in Eric Morris’ debut. Then No. 6 Oregon came to Stillwater. Oklahoma State responded with one of the biggest upsets of the young season, defeating the Ducks 39-31.

Drew Mestemaker was spectacular, throwing for 317 yards and two touchdowns while adding 109 rushing yards and another score. More importantly, Oklahoma State dominated the line of scrimmage and accumulated 554 total yards compared to just 281 for Oregon.

The Cowboys also snapped a 21-game losing streak against FBS opponents.

For a program trying to establish a new identity under Morris, this was the type of victory that can change the perception surrounding an entire season. It also served as a reminder that home-field advantage in college football can produce extraordinary results.

Biggest Loser: Oregon

Oregon’s loss wasn’t simply a case of a highly ranked team getting caught on the road.

The Ducks were thoroughly outplayed.

Oklahoma State accumulated nearly twice as many total yards and consistently moved the football against an Oregon defense that struggled to generate stops. Dante Moore finished with 191 passing yards and two touchdowns, but the Ducks couldn’t keep pace offensively.

The loss also ended Oregon’s 35-game winning streak against unranked opponents under head coach Dan Lanning. Oregon now faces an entirely different national conversation.

The Ducks entered the season with championship expectations. After losing to Oklahoma State, they will have significantly less room for error as the season progresses.

The talent is still there, but Saturday showed that talent alone won’t guarantee a College Football Playoff spot.

Michigan Answers the Criticism

Michigan entered its matchup with No. 11 Oklahoma under plenty of scrutiny following its controversial Week 1 victory over Western Michigan.

The Wolverines responded with one of their strongest performances of the young season. Michigan defeated Oklahoma 17-10 behind a defense that limited the Sooners to 289 total yards. Bryce Underwood wasn’t asked to carry the offense through the air, completing 9-of-17 passes for 111 yards. Instead, he contributed 87 rushing yards and a touchdown.

With the game tied 10-10 in the fourth quarter, Michigan forced an interception deep in Oklahoma territory. Jordan Marshall then scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to give the Wolverines the lead.

Michigan’s defense held from there.

The Wolverines are now 2-0, while Oklahoma falls to 1-1 with a difficult schedule still ahead.

Texas A&M Pulls Away From Arizona State

No. 10 Texas A&M also made a statement Saturday, defeating Arizona State 48-20 in College Station.

The game was competitive through three quarters before the Aggies exploded for 24 fourth-quarter points.

Arizona State actually finished with more total yards, 369-255, but four turnovers proved costly. Texas A&M turned those mistakes into points and completely controlled the final quarter.

Marcel Reed threw three touchdown passes, while Arizona State quarterback Cutter Boley threw two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

The result moves Texas A&M to 2-0 and gives the Aggies another convincing victory against a Power Four opponent.

Utah Makes a Statement

No. 20 Utah was another team that made its presence felt.

The Utes dominated Arkansas 43-10 in Salt Lake City, outgaining the Razorbacks 442-305. Quarterback Devon Dampier accounted for four touchdowns, including two through the air and two on the ground.

Utah led just 7-3 after the first quarter but erupted for 22 second-quarter points and never looked back.

The Big 12 continues to look increasingly competitive, and Utah’s performance gives the conference another team to watch as the season develops.

The National Picture

After two weeks, the biggest takeaway is simple: there is no shortage of questions at the top of the sport.

Texas now owns a signature victory over the nation’s No. 1 team. Oklahoma State suddenly has one of the biggest wins of the season.

Michigan has answered early criticism with a 2-0 start.

Oregon, meanwhile, has already suffered a major setback, while Oklahoma now has little margin for error after dropping its first ranked matchup.

And that’s exactly what makes college football so unpredictable. The season is only two weeks old, but the national championship picture has already undergone a major shakeup.

September has officially arrived — and chaos has arrived with it.
