Paladins Lacrosse Wins Over Blue Hose 15-7

The Furman women’s lacrosse team got Big South Conference play started Wednesday evening with a 15-7 victory over the Presbyterian College Blue Hose at Bailey Memorial Stadium.

Furman evens its record at 5-5 overall and moves to 1-0 in the Big South. With the loss, Presbyterian falls to 3-7 on the year and 0-1 in conference play. The Paladins improve to 9-0 all-time against the Blue Hose and 5-0 in Big South openers since joining the league in 2022.

Reynolds Hester paced Furman with career highs of seven points and six assists while Lily Toole compiled five points on three goals and two assists. Toole caused a team best three turnovers and picked up four ground balls along with Lilly Dyer and Zoe Milmoe. Allie Kandel netted a hat trick, and Emily Muir provided three points on two goals and an assist. Skylar Hilmer won five draws. Goalie Sam Melville earned the win on five saves and two ground balls.

Emily Currie led Presbyterian with four points on three assists and a goal, and Alyssa Perez collected three points on two goals and an assist. Goalies Kayleigh Aitken and Morgan Thompson combined for 12 saves.

The Paladins led wire-to-wire on Wednesday, opening the contest scoring five of the first six goals, including two apiece from Kandel and Muir, to build a 5-1 lead after the opening quarter. The Blue Hose cut Furman’s lead down to three less than five minutes into the second quarter before the Paladins answered with a 7-1 run that covered over 20 minutes of action. Leading 8-3 at halftime, Furman started the second half with four consecutive goals to push its lead to 12-3 at the 1:44 mark of the third quarter after Kandel’s goal.

Toole, Taylor Bank, and Rachel Ward teamed up three fourth quarter goals to give the Paladins their largest lead of the contest, 15-5, with 4:37 left in regulation. Toole’s third, and final, goal of the game increased Furman’s advantage out to double digits.

The Paladins wrapped up the contest holding a 34-17 advantage in shots, 30-13 in ground balls, 13-11 in draws, and 14-7 in caused turnovers. Defensively, Furman forced Presbyterian into 24 turnovers, the most by a Paladin opponent this season.

Furman’s 30 ground balls and 14 caused turnovers rank fifth- and tied for eighth-most in a game in program history. The six assists recorded by Hester are tied for fourth-most in a game and finished just one shy of matching the school single-game record.
