PORTLAND, Ore. — For 30 minutes, High Point looked ready to keep dancing.

For the final 10, Arkansas reminded everyone why March is as much about survival as it is magic.

The No. 12 seed High Point Panthers saw their historic run come to an end in the Round of 32, falling 94–88 to No. 4 seed Arkansas in a back-and-forth battle that delivered everything March Madness promises — pace, shot-making, and late-game drama.

Game Flow: Punch for Punch

HPU came out fearless, trading blows with one of the SEC’s most talented rosters. Arkansas held a slim 46–42 lead at halftime, but the Panthers never allowed the Razorbacks to create meaningful separation.

Every Arkansas surge was met with a High Point response.

  • A Rob Martin bucket
  • A Cam’Ron Fletcher three
  • A timely defensive stop

By the under-four timeout, the game had turned into a track meet — exactly the style that fueled High Point’s Cinderella push into the second round.

Stars Shine Bright on Both Sides

High Point’s Dynamic Duo Delivers

High Point leaned heavily on its two offensive engines:

  • Rob Martin: 30 points (11-23 FG, 3-11 3PT)
  • Cam’Ron Fletcher: 25 points, 8 rebounds

Together, they accounted for 55 of High Point’s 88 points, consistently attacking Arkansas off the bounce and in transition.

Their ability to generate offense kept High Point within striking distance all night — and nearly pushed them into the Sweet 16.

Arkansas’ Star Power Takes Over Late

But when the game tightened, Arkansas had the best player on the floor.

  • Darius Acuff Jr.: 36 points, including 9 of the team’s final 11

Acuff delivered in winning time, breaking an 83–83 tie with a series of clutch baskets that ultimately created separation.

He was complemented by a balanced Razorback effort:

  • Meleek Thomas: 19 points
  • Malique Ewin: Double-double (14 pts, 12 reb)
  • Billy Richmond III: Double-double (15 pts, 10 reb)

That size and depth advantage showed up when it mattered most.

The Difference: Size, Efficiency, and Second Chances. High Point couldn’t hang

Despite the close scoreline, Arkansas controlled several key areas:

1. Interior Presence

Arkansas outrebounded High Point 37–36, but more importantly dominated physically down the stretch with second-chance opportunities.

2. Efficiency Gap

  • Arkansas: 51% FG, 56% from three
  • High Point: 45% FG, 26% from three

That perimeter shooting disparity proved critical in a game decided by possessions.

3. Free Throws

Arkansas went 15-20 from the line, capitalizing on late-game fouls, while High Point couldn’t generate enough trips to keep pace.

Turning Point: 83–83 to Final Horn for High Point

With just minutes remaining, the game was tied at 83, and momentum hung in the balance.

That’s when Arkansas elevated:

  • Acuff isolation bucket
  • Defensive stop
  • Transition finish

In a flash, a tie game became a multi-possession lead — and High Point never fully recovered.

A Run Worth Remembering for High Point

Even in defeat, HPU leaves March Madness with its head high.

  • Entered as a No. 12 seed
  • Defeated No. 5 Wisconsin in the opening round
  • Brought a 15-game win streak into the matchup

This wasn’t just a one-game flash — it was a team that proved it belonged on the national stage.

Final Thoughts

HPU didn’t just participate in March Madness — it impacted it.

They pushed a Sweet 16-caliber Arkansas team to the brink, played their style unapologetically, and nearly extended one of the best stories of the tournament.

But in March, experience, size, and star power often win out. Arkansas had all three when it mattered most.

What’s Next

  • Arkansas advances to the Sweet 16, continuing its deep postseason run.
  • High Point’s season ends, but its rise as a mid-major force feels far from finished.
