The Spartanburg Methodist College softball team split a doubleheader against Shawnee State, losing game one, 6-1, and winning the nightcap, 6-5.
Shawnee State (2-2) hit three home runs en route to the game one victory. Sierra Dunningan and Gabby Adams each hit two-run home runs to lead the Bears to the win.
SMC (9-1) had six different players record a hit, including an RBI single by Lauren Ballew in the loss. Dunningan put the visitors ahead in the top of the first with her two-run home run. Ballew’s RBI single cut the deficit to 2-1. The Bears added a run in both the third and fourth innings, including a two-run home run by Adams in the fourth to account for the final margin.
The nightcap saw the Pioneer offense come alive with six runs on nine hits in a 6-5 victory. After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first, SMC responded by sending nine batters to the plate and scoring five runs on six hits. Among the key hits was a two-out, two-RBI single by Savannah Evans.
Shawnee State trimmed the deficit to 5-3 with three runs in the fifth inning. SMC added an insurance run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Jacie Ross.
Alex Stuckey and Saleena Rollins each had two hits, and Carson McCowan scored twice to lead the Pioneers. In the circle, Maddie Handy improved to 3-0 with a complete-game effort.
The Bears were led by a three-hit performance from leadoff batter Jenna Christensen.
SMC will next host Paine College for a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 4, at Grant Softball Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
