Furman Takes 4-2 Win Over Florida Gulf Coast in Women’s Tennis

Furman edged out Florida Gulf Coast, 4-2, Monday at the FGCU Tennis Complex in Fort Myers, Fla.

The 75th-ranked Paladins move to 5-3 after handing the Eagles their first home loss of the season, while Florida Gulf Coast drops to 9-3 with the loss.

Furman won two doubles matches to claim the opening point. Freshmen Lillie Murphy and Elle Warren, who are ranked 31st nationally, topped Nora Svensson and Anjali Kotecha, 6-3, at flight one, and junior Macy Hitchcock and freshman Molly Robinson beat Sabrina Jaramillo and Ashley Matz, 6-2, at number three. The flight two match was unfinished, with Paladin freshmen Bianca Ceroni and Sasha Dimitrov leading June Bjork and Afr Burillo Berezak, 5-2.

The Paladins surged to a 3-0 lead after singles wins by Ceroni and Murphy. Ceroni recorded a 6-3, 6-4 advantage over Kotecha at number four, then Murphy topped 120th-ranked Bjork, 6-4, 6-3, at flight two. The Eagles answered with victories at flights three and five to stay in the contest. At number three, Matz posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over Dimitrov, and at flight five, Jaramillo held off Hitchcock, 6-2, 2-6, 6-0.

Freshman Lily Doherty entered the lineup for the Paladins at flight six, where she clinched the match with a 6-3, 7-6(1) decision versus Berezak.

The number one match was unfinished with Warren and Svensson tied at 1-all in the third set. Svensson won set one, 6-2, but Warren answered with a 7-6(7) victory in set two.
