In a game that felt like a March preview in late February, GCU showed both its resilience and the razor-thin margins that define the Mountain West race.
GCU erased a 17-point first-half deficit and briefly grabbed the lead in the final four minutes before ultimately falling 74-69 to Utah State in Logan. It was a loss that stings — particularly after climbing all the way back — but it was not a fatal one. With Nevada falling in overtime on the road at UNLV, the race for the No. 4 seed and the coveted first-round bye remains very much alive for the Lopes.
Saturday night was a missed opportunity — but not a closed door.
Hot Start Puts GCU in an Early Hole
The opening 20 minutes in Logan felt like a storm GCU couldn’t quite get out of. Utah State came out confident, decisive, and lethal from beyond the arc, knocking down 7-of-10 from three in the first half and stretching the floor in a way that forced the Lopes into constant recovery mode. Every defensive lapse seemed to end the same way — a clean look and a rising murmur from the home crowd.

The Aggies built the lead steadily, eventually pushing it to 17 points, and at 41-27 by halftime, the deficit felt heavy. GCU wasn’t playing poorly across the board, but the combination of hot shooting and self-inflicted mistakes created too much separation. The Lopes committed 14 turnovers on the night, and Utah State turned those into 15 points, capitalizing on nearly every opportunity.
Still, even down double digits, some flashes suggested the game wasn’t over.
A Furious Second-Half Rally Proves GCU can Hang
The second half told a completely different story.
GCU came out with more defensive edge, more physicality, and far more control. The Aggies cooled from deep, and the Lopes began to chip away — not in one overwhelming run, but in disciplined stretches that slowly tightened the margin.

Jaden Henley steadied everything offensively, finishing with 22 points and attacking with purpose. Makiah Williams added 19, giving GCU reliable perimeter scoring as the deficit shrank from 15 to 10, then from 10 to a single possession. Every stop felt bigger than the last.
And then came the moment that flipped the building.
After trailing by as many as 17, GCU surged ahead and took a 59-58 lead at the under-4 timeout, completing a stunning turnaround. What had once looked like a runaway had become a dogfight, and for a brief stretch, the Lopes controlled the tempo and the scoreboard.
Depth and Details Swing It Back
But road wins in this league demand more than one good stretch — they demand sustained execution.
Utah State’s depth proved to be a defining factor. The Aggies received 30 bench points, while GCU managed just six. That gap quietly built over the course of the night and loomed large in the final minutes. When rotations shortened, and legs grew heavy, Utah State had answers.

The Lopes also absorbed a tough blow in the second half when Wilhelm Breidenbach exited with an injury, thinning the frontcourt at a crucial time. The physical battle inside tightened late, and every rebound became contested territory.
Perhaps most importantly, Utah State protected the basketball, committing just six turnovers compared to GCU’s 14. In a five-point game, that margin can’t be ignored.
When the Lopes took the lead late, the Aggies didn’t panic. They executed, hit timely shots, and converted at the line to close the door.
A Tale of Resilience — and Margin
The final numbers reflect just how thin the line was. GCU shot 45% from the field and an impressive 92% at the free-throw line — numbers typically good enough to win. They won the rebounding battle and found offensive rhythm when it mattered most.
But the early 17-point hole, the turnover differential, and the bench scoring disparity created a cushion Utah State could lean on when the pressure mounted.

What remains is a layered takeaway. The Lopes showed toughness, composure, and the ability to respond in a hostile environment. They proved they can fight back against one of the league’s toughest home teams and seize control late.
Yet they were also reminded how unforgiving the margins are — especially when chasing a game from behind.
GCU climbed the mountain Saturday night.
They just ran out of time at the summit.
