Deacs Incredible 2nd Half Not Enough

The Demon Deacons lost another close one against the #24 Louisville Cardinals at home on Saturday afternoon. The Deacs were down by as much as thirteen in this game. This was an incredibly physical contest, both in terms of play and contact. This is not the first time this season the Deacs have given up a big lead early and had to battle back. It has been an unfortunate theme in a lot of high profile games this year. The Deacs are now in a very difficult position as it pertains to March Madness.

Juke Harris

Once again, superstar Juke Harris led the Deacs in scoring with 25 points. Harris shot 8-21 and 3-10 from three with 11 rebounds and 3 assists. Harris is averaging 20.9 points per game, good for 17th in the country. This is the eleventh time this season that Juke Harris has scored 20 points or more this season. Today was also the third time this season that Harris has had at least 10 rebounds. While it wasn’t the most efficient Harris has been this year, he continues to step up in a big way in the absence of Nate Calmese.

Team Effort

As a team, the Deacs had more than a few bright spots today. Combined, the Deacs shot 43% from the field, 32% from three, and 72% from the free throw line. Wake Forest had 17 assists on 27 baskets, which is almost 63%. Despite 5 turnovers in the first half, the Demon Deacons only had 1 the rest of the game. Omaha Biliew had a huge night off the bench, with 14 points on 5-6 shooting, including a perfect 3-3 from three. Sebastian Akins had 12 points on 4-11 shooting with 2 rebounds and 4 assists. Myles Colvin had 10 points on 2-8 shooting with one of those makes being a three.

Moving Forward

Up next, the Deacs are on the road to Atlanta to face Georgia Tech at 9pm Wednesday on the ACC Network. This was a huge missed opportunity for Coach Forbes and the Demon Deacons. Not only did todays result drop Wake Forest to a losing record, it also puts the Deacs in a 3-way tie for 14th in the ACC standings. This is noteworthy because the bottom 3 teams do not qualify for the ACC tournament.

At this point, the ACC tournament may be the Deacs best hope for making it to March Madness. Four of the Deacs final 7 games are on the road, and only one game is against a ranked opponent. The Demon Deacons need to get things in order quickly, time and opportunities are running short.
