When the #1 rank in the SoCon is up for grabs, the Bucs didn’t let a little winter weather stand in their way. The Wofford Terriers hosted The Bucs on Sunday evening for a thrilling contest. Both teams came into this match with a SoCon record of 7-2. Both teams just as eager to show they deserve to top spot in the conference heading into the last month of matchups before the madness of March arrives.

The Bucs coming off of a loss last week to the Catamounts, were ready to show why they deserve the #1 rank. And boy, did they show up in Spartanburg this evening. In a stunning performance, Cam Morris, Senior Forward, led the team in almost every stat. Morris accrued 22 points, 8-12 FG’s, 6-6 FT’s, 7 rebounds, 5 steals and a block to boot. Followed closely behind was Jordan McCullum, Sophomore Forward, with 17 points going 5-8 on FG’s, 2-2 of 3’s, 5-6 for FG’s and 2 steals. As a unit, The Bucs made 48% FG’s, 40% from outside the arc, and shot 93% of FT’s.
Wofford throughout the game decidedly gave it their all, no matter the deficit. The Terriers however were without some key players, Kahmare Holmes and Luke Flynn. Despite this, the Terries fought back every step of the game. The Terries stayed consistent with The Bucs, maintaining 48% FG’s, 37% of 3’s to almost match the Bucs 40%. The biggest opportunity shown Sunday evening for the Terriers was controlling the ball by recovering rebounds (24 to Bucs 35 rebounds).

This matchup consisted of a back and forth, but the overarching theme was The Bucs maintaining control over the court. Minimizing turnovers, forcing steals, almost perfect FT percentage added up for The Bucs in a big way. As Coach Savage stated last week, when The Bucs have the sense of urgency it takes, they’re fine. And we saw that this evening. The Bucs had something to prove after a sweep from Western Carolina, their Achilles Heel of sorts, and there’s no doubt now that The Bucs belong on top.
The Wofford Terriers are back on the road to VMI on February 4th, with a 6pm tipoff.
What’s next for The Bucs? The Bucs are hosting the Furman Paladins at Freedom Hall at 7pm, February 4th. Currently, Furman is ranked 2nd in the SoCon, and will be another test for The Bucs. This test is to their advantage at home though, and to cement their spot at the top of the SoCon.
