Lady Deacs Comeback Falls Short in Shootout

The Lady Deacs fell just 6 points short in a wild 3OT shootout against Virginia today by a score of 109-103. Wake Forest had six players score in double figures. The two teams combined to commit 43 fouls, 37 turnovers, and 7 blocks. This was a very tough game. But that absolutely did not stop it from being a thriller. The Lady Deacs were down as much as 18, but 3 clutch free throws from Grace Oliver sent us to OT. This will likely go down as one of the top 10 ACC games of the season.

Inside the Numbers

Grace Oliver, Aurora Sorbye, Milan Brown, Mary Carter, and Caitlyn Jones all scored in double figures against the Cavaliers. The only player to play double-digit minutes and not score in double figures was Emily Johns. Johns had a great night off the bench, logging 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals.

Milan Brown had 30 points on 11-20 shooting and 3-4 from three. Brown also had 11 rebounds, 5 assists, and a steal. Grace Oliver had 19 points on 5-10 shooting, 3-5 from three, and 6-7 from the line. Aurora Sorbye had 12 points on 4-7 shooting, 1-4 from beyond the arc, and 3-3 from the line. Mary Carter also had 12 points, on 5-11 from the floor and 2-6 from 3 point range. Caitlyn Jones had a huge 18 points night on 8-11 shooting, 1-1 from three, and 1-4 from the line.

As A Team

The Lady Deacs had an incredible night offensively against the Cavaliers. As a team, Wake Forest shot 51% from the field, 43% from three, and 75% from the free throw line. The Lady Deacs had 37 rebounds, 20 assists, 7 steals, and 4 blocks. The problems came on the defensive end of the floor. The Lady Deacs gave up 43% shooting from the field and 32% from three.

Moving Forward

Yet another single-digit loss drops the Lady Deacs to 12-10 overall and 2-8 in ACC play. The Lady Deacs are currently ranked 15th in the ACC standings. It has been a difficult year to say the least. Up next, the Lady Deacs head to Cameron Indoor to take on Duke at noon on February first on the ACC Network. There are still a few opportunities left to boost the Lady Deacs tournament metrics, but they must be seized.
