Harris has 26 in Close 84-83 Deacs Loss
Strong Scoring Effort
The Wake Forest Demon Deacons came up just short Thursday night 84-83 against #15 Texas Tech. Harris led the way scoring with 26 points on 8-13 from the floor and 3/5 from 3. Myles Colvin led the bench in scoring with 19, 2nd overall to only Juke Harris. There is a lot to like in a losing effort for Wake Forest. 47 percent from the floor and 44 percent from the 3 is an incredibly strong performance, and should have been enough for a win. The Demon Deacons were able to score 26 points off of 14 turnovers. The Deacs also dominated the paint, with 40 points coming from the lane.
Sloppy Finish
But it wasn’t all positive. Despite the strong shooting performance from 3 and field goal range, the Demon Deacons shot an abysmal 59 percent from the free throw line. Only 12 shots were assisted for the Demon Deacons, showing a possible lack of ball movement on offense. The Deacs also managed to commit 19 fouls, which sent the Red Raiders to the line 21 times, leading to the 1 point deficit. Most alarmingly of all, the Deacs managed only 10 offensive rebounds. This is far below what is expected for a winning team in a college basketball game. Wake lost the lead with only about a minute and a half left in the game, and would never regain it.
Looking Ahead
Up next, Wake Forest “hosts” the Memphis Tigers on Friday November 21st at 7pm on CBS. Based on how the Demon Deacons have played in recent contests, this should be a close game. This will be the final round of the Baha Mar Championship. I expect the Deacs to be able to dominate once again in the post. If the Deacs are going to win, they need to outrebound their opponent and cut back on the dumb fouls. This team doesn’t exactly have a wide margin for error. If the 3 point shooting can stay consistent, this team can beat anyone.
