GREENVILLE, S.C. — Freshman forward Ryan Reid delivered the golden goal in the 107th minute as Furman defeated UNC Greensboro 1–0 in overtime on Sunday afternoon, securing the Southern Conference Tournament championship and the program’s 16th league title.
The win gives the Paladins back-to-back SoCon Tournament crowns and extends their unbeaten streak to 11 straight matches, improving their season mark to 14-1-4.
Reid’s Extra-Time Winner Seals It
Scoreless through regulation, Furman finally broke through in the second overtime period. Reid found space inside the box and buried the match-winner, sending the Paladins into a sideline celebration and punching their automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The goal capped a balanced offensive performance in which Furman outshot UNCG 9–7.
Horvat Posts Another Clean Sheet
Goalkeeper Ivan Horvat, recently named SoCon Goalkeeper of the Year, anchored a disciplined defensive effort and recorded his sixth shutout of the season. Horvat controlled the box on set pieces and made several key stops to keep the match level before Reid’s late strike.
A Season of Dominance
Furman entered the title match after sweeping major SoCon postseason awards earlier this week. Diego Hernandez earned SoCon Player of the Year, Braden Dunham was selected Freshman of the Year, and longtime head coach Doug Allison was named Coach of the Year.
The Paladins now carry significant momentum into the NCAA Tournament, where they will look to build on one of the program’s most consistent seasons in recent memory.
