Demon Deacons Stifle Blue Hose
Wake Forest women’s basketball dominated the Presbyterian Blue Hose in a 78-41 home victory on Thursday night. The Lady Deacs move to 2-0 to start the season thanks to a strong performance from starting guard Milan Brown. In 21 minutes of action, Brown shot 7/12 for 14 points, 5 rebounds, an assist, 3 steals, and a block. The Demon Deacons absolutely stifled the Blue Hose’ offense, not allowing a single player to score in double figures. Wake Forest was also efficient on the offensive end of the floor, with ever single player that saw minutes scoring at least a point. Not only did every Wake Forest player record a point, but each player also recorded at least one rebound.
Team Play Leads the Way
This was the kind of performance I was looking for but didn’t get in the win over Radford. This was truly a team win, with every single player that hit the court contributing in some fashion to the box score. Wake shot 50/9 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from beyond the arc. The Lady Deacs also dominated the glass, outrebounding Presbyterian 47-30 on the night. Despite the large disparity in the overall numbers, the Deacs were anemic on the offensive glass.

Cause for Concern
Even with 16 second chance points, only 9 of the 47 rebounds came on offense. This should raise concerns moving forward if the issue persists in future games. It will be very difficult for this team to win in the incredibly tough ACC without creating second chance opportunities on offense. Surprisingly, 46 of the 78 total points came in the paint despite the lack of offensive rebounds. The biggest concern by far from this performance was the amount of turnovers. Wake Forest turned the ball over 18 times which led to 13 points for the Blue Hose, which accounts for nearly a quarter of their total points on the night.
Moving Forward
The Lady Deacs remain in the friendly confines of Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum for their next game as they face the Hampton Lady Pirates on Sunday afternoon at 2pm. The Demon Deacons will be looking for a little payback, as the Lady Pirates won the previous matchup in 2015 by a score of 47-42. There is a lot of potential here for this Wake Forest team, but the main focus needs to be on game-to-game improvements. As long as the good effort continues on defense, Wake Forest will have a chance in every game.
