A Tradition of Excellence

Florida A&M University stands as one of the crown jewels of HBCU football. The Rattlers’ storied program, founded in the early 1900s, has long symbolized athletic excellence and Black college football dominance. Over the decades, FAMU has claimed 13 Black College National Championships and 29 conference titles, establishing itself as one of the most successful programs in HBCU history.

The Rattlers reached the pinnacle of national recognition in 1978 when they captured the NCAA Division I-AA Championship, becoming the only historically Black college or university ever to win the Division I-AA (now FCS) title — a feat that remains unmatched to this day. FAMU’s tradition of excellence also includes historic milestones such as the 1969 matchup against the University of Tampa, one of the first integrated football games in the South.

Coaching Legends Who Built the Dynasty

At the heart of FAMU’s legacy are its legendary head coaches who shaped the program’s identity. Jake Gaither, who led the Rattlers from 1945 to 1969, remains a towering figure in college football history. Gaither compiled a remarkable 204–36–4 record and guided FAMU to eight Black College National Championships, earning a reputation for both discipline and innovation. His “blood, sweat, and tears” mantra became the standard for Rattler football.

Rudy Hubbard, who took the reins in 1974, carried that torch into a new era, leading FAMU to back-to-back national titles in 1977 and 1978, including the Division I-AA crown. Later, Ken Riley, a former FAMU quarterback and NFL legend, coached the team from 1986 to 1993, winning two MEAC titles and mentoring future stars. The late Billy Joe further enhanced the program’s reputation with multiple playoff appearances and an explosive offensive system that drew national attention.

From Simmons to Colzie: A New Era

In the modern era, Willie Simmons rejuvenated the Rattlers from 2018 to 2023 with a 45–13 overall record, including a dominant 34–5 mark in conference play. His tenure restored FAMU to prominence and included a SWAC Championship and a Celebration Bowl appearance.

In January 2024, James Colzie III was named the Rattlers’ 19th head coach, tasked with maintaining the program’s high standard while ushering in a new era of leadership and recruiting excellence. Colzie’s emphasis on discipline, player development, and family culture has resonated with fans and alumni eager to see the program continue its championship ways.

Staying the Course in 2025

Though the Rattlers sit at 1–4 early in the 2025 season, optimism remains high in Tallahassee. Colzie’s young squad has shown flashes of potential, particularly on defense and special teams, where several underclassmen have stepped into key roles. The offense, led by an improving ground game and a deep receiver corps, has started to find rhythm despite early adversity.

More importantly, the culture shift under Colzie continues to take root. Practices remain intense, the locker room remains unified, and the players’ belief in the program’s long-term vision has not wavered. Coaches and fans alike understand that rebuilding after years of success requires patience — and at FAMU, patience often leads to prosperity.

For the Rattlers, it’s less about the early record and more about the foundation being laid for future success. With several promising recruits and young standouts gaining experience each week, FAMU’s 2025 campaign still represents progress, growth, and a renewed sense of pride in one of college football’s most historic programs.

The Soundtrack of FAMU: The Marching “100”

No FAMU gameday experience is complete without the thunderous rhythm and precision of the Marching “100.” Formed in 1946 by the late Dr. William P. Foster, the band has become an international symbol of musical excellence, showmanship, and pride. Known for their unmatched energy, innovative formations, and sharp choreography, the Marching “100” has performed at presidential inaugurations, Super Bowls, and the Summer Olympics — earning the title of “America’s Band.”

Their halftime performances are as anticipated as the football games themselves, blending artistry and athleticism in a way that embodies the FAMU spirit. Under the direction of Dr. Shelby R. Chipman, the band continues to inspire generations of musicians and fans, upholding a standard of excellence that mirrors the tradition on the gridiron.

Together, the Rattlers and the Marching “100” represent the perfect harmony between athletic dominance and cultural pride — a partnership that defines what makes Florida A&M University so special.

Producing NFL Greats

FAMU’s influence stretches well beyond the college gridiron. More than 70 former Rattlers have gone on to play in the NFL, including two who were enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Ken Riley, one of the greatest defensive backs in NFL history, starred for the Cincinnati Bengals and ranks among the league’s all-time leaders in interceptions. “Bullet” Bob Hayes, another FAMU great, became a two-sport legend — an Olympic gold medalist and a Super Bowl champion with the Dallas Cowboys — and remains the only man to hold both titles.

Other notable alumni include Earl Holmes, who had a decade-long NFL career before returning to coach at his alma mater; Roger Finnie, a versatile lineman who spent 11 years in the league; and Major Hazelton and Nate James, who helped elevate the Rattlers to national prominence in the 1960s.

Rattlers Still Reaching the Pros

In recent years, FAMU has continued producing professional talent. Markquese Bell earned a roster spot with the Dallas Cowboys and became a standout hybrid safety-linebacker. Isaiah Land joined the NFL ranks after an All-American career, while wide receiver Xavier Smith and running back Terrell Jennings also found professional opportunities.

Cornerback Kendall Bohler, one of the program’s latest stars, has drawn attention as an NFL prospect heading into 2025. These new faces continue the program’s proud legacy of excellence at the next level.

The Spirit of the Rattlers Lives On

Today, Florida A&M remains more than just a football powerhouse — it is a cultural institution. From the historic success under Gaither to the resurgence under Simmons and the new era led by Colzie, the Rattlers’ legacy embodies excellence, pride, and perseverance. With one of the most passionate fan bases in college football, a world-renowned marching band, and a deep tradition of producing both athletes and leaders, FAMU continues to stand tall among HBCUs and the broader college football landscape — a true standard-bearer of greatness from Tallahassee’s highest hill.
