Champaign, IL – Saturday, October 11, 2025 – 12:00 p.m. ET / 11:00 a.m. CT – FOX
This is a matchup that favors Ohio State largely. Ohio State D-Line at the start of the season was the weakest link of the incredible defense. The past few weeks they have done nothing but get better. Dominate performances back to back weeks. Illinois pass defense is also another weakness that heavily favors Ohio State. Ohio State QB Julian Sayin leads the nation in completion percentage, while having some say the best 2 WR in the country. The banged up Illinois offense without their starting center will have to face the best defense in football while the Illinois secondary will have to deal with NFL ready wide outs.
Key Strengths & Weaknesses
Ohio State’s Advantages
- Stingy defense: Through five games, OSU’s defense has allowed just two touchdowns and no red-zone TDs.
- Elite passing: Freshman QB Julian Sayin is completing 80.2% of his passes, with over 1,300 yards and 13 TDs so far this season.
- Receiver depth: Wideouts Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate have been standout targets, combining for nearly 900 yards and multiple TDs.
- Big-game experience under Ryan Day: The Buckeyes have won 48 of 53 Big Ten games under Day, with a strong road record.
Illinois’ Case & Vulnerabilities
- Passing attack can threaten: QB Luke Altmyer has thrown for 1,573 yards, 12 TDs, and zero interceptions, completing 73.6% of his passes.
- Explosive receivers: WR Hank Beatty leads Illinois in receptions (32) and yardage (569) in 2025.
- Turnover margin & special teams: Illinois ranks among the top in forced fumbles and fumble recoveries.
- Defensive issues: The Illini defense ranks 83rd in pass yards allowed per attempt and is similarly weak in run defense. Also, Illinois’ total defense is among the weaker units in the Big Ten.
- Offensive line concerns: Illinois’ OL has allowed pressures and sacks, and their run game has struggled (3.7 ypc) this season.
1. Illibuck Rivalry & Historical Context
This game renews the Illibuck rivalry trophy a wooden turtle awarded to the winner. The two teams haven’t met since 2017, and Ohio State’s last trip to Champaign was in 2015. OSU leads the all-time series by a wide margin, and has won the last nine meetings. Illinois is also aiming for something of a milestone: hosting a #1-ranked team for the first time since 2006.
Final Prediction
With all this in mind, here’s my projected outcome:
- Score: Ohio State 34, Illinois 17
- Reasoning:
- OSU’s defense is elite, allowing just 5 points per game.
- Illinois’ passing game is solid, but their rush offense and defense have vulnerabilities OSU can exploit.
