Landen Clark Lead the Phoenix in Close Win over Western
By Coach Steve

The Cats from Cullowhee had another heartbreaking loss yesterday. Landen Clark had 377 yards of total offense and 4 TDs to go with it in a back and forth instant classic against Western. Clark led the way rushing for the Elon Phoenix with 72 yards and 2 TDs on the ground on 25 carries. Another week, another opposing WR with over 100 yards. Isaiah Fuhrmann had 5 catches for an eye-watering 105 yards, while Zimere Winston and Landyn Backey each added a TD through the air on a combined 3 receptions. That’s right, THREE. The WCU defense is an incredibly confusing entity. They give up a ton of points, but at the same time, force turnovers at an incredibly high rate. Its maddeningly inconsistent.
The offense continued to look strong, With Isaac Lee and Bennett Judy combining for 36/55 passing for 246 yards, 2 TDs, and 1 INT each. James Tyre and Patrick Boyd Jr led the way for the Catamounts, combining for 120 yards on the ground, with James Tyre getting the lone rushing TD for Western. Tyre also had 8 catches for 87 yards and another TD. Its pretty clear who is going to be WR1 if/when Taron Dickens returns.
Looking forward, I still have a few questions about this Catamount football team. Its not like Judy and Lee have been bad at QB. Its not like the offense is struggling without Dickens. The defense, however, is not as stout as we may have been led to believe this offseason. All that being said, I am still confident that WVU will right the ship once Dickens is back under center in Cullowhee. Per my reporting earlier this year, Dickens is expected to miss AT LEAST the first 3 games, and therefore will allegedly return for the matchup this week against SoCon foe Samford. The Catamounts kick off their quest for a SoCon title against the Bulldogs at 2pm eastern on ESPN+. See you next week, and GO CATS!
