Behind an output of four goals from four different Demon Deacons, the No. 7 Wake Forest men’s soccer team (3-0-1, 0-0-0 ACC) continued its unbeaten start to 2025 as it downed Lipscomb (1-2-1, 0-0-0 ASUN), 3-0, Friday evening at Spry Stadium.

Wake Forest’s four goals were a season-high early into the campaign, as junior Ethan Subachan got the Demon Deacons in front in the 25th minute as he perfectly positioned himself for second effort for his first goal of the year. Then just minutes later, fellow junior Tate Lorentz headed home a deflected cross from sophomore Amoni Thomas for his second of the year. Minutes out of the halftime break, senior Basit Umar bagged his first goal of the year heading home a cross from sophomore Jeffrey White. Senior Cooper Flax set up the goal with a beautiful, placed ball to White down the right wing. Then in the final minutes, redshirt junior Nico Rabiu scored his second career goal with Lorentz and a debuting Bret Russell Jr. logging assist.

In goal, redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Jonah Mednard and redshirt freshman Owen Barnett – who made his collegiate debut – combined for a shutout. So far this season, Mednard has posted a 0.27 goals-against average and a .889 save percentage with just one goal allowed. Of note, one goal conceded through four matches is the best defensive start for the Demon Deacons through four matches since 2008. For the fourth-consecutive match to open the season, Wake Forest went with a starting backline of junior Travis Smith, Jr., sophomores Mason Sullivan and Amoni Thomas, and graduate captain Cristian Escribano.

The Demon Deacon defense once again excelled in limiting opportunities for the visitors and only allowed zero shots on goal over the 90 minutes for the first time since a 1-0 victory over Jacksonville on Oct. 4, 2022. Additionally, Wake Forest has outshot opponents 67-to-33 through the first four matches of the season. Additionally, this marks the first time since Oct. 1-12 (four matches) of last year that the Demon Deacons recorded three-consecutive clean sheets. With the win, the Demon Deacons are now unbeaten in their last 16 matches at Spry Stadium. Overall, the Deacs hold a 12-0-4 home record dating back to Aug. 25 of last year.

Man of the Match – Basit Umar

Umar scored his first goal of the season to help seal the match early in the second half, as he headed home a cross from White in the 49th minute.

The Kumasi, Ghana, native also played a pivotal role in Wake Forest’s opening goal as his blocked shot fell right into the path of Subachan, who fired the ball into the back of the net in the 25th minute.

He is the fourth Wake Forest player to win man of the match this season:

September 5 vs. Lipscomb: Basit Umar
From Coach Muuss
“We talk a lot about team wins and complete team wins, and I think we saw that today. Super proud of the guys from start to finish. They had relentless energy. That’s what we talked about all week. We had an opportunity with a three-day lead-in to try to get better. The thing that I’m most proud of is not just the grit that they showed for 90 minutes, whoever was on the field, but it was our central midfield, playing with each other and playing off each other. I thought we have good enough players to do that. We’ve been out of rhythm a little bit, and I think we found that a little bit here today. All the reviews almost spoiled some of the goals, but there were some really good football goals here tonight. I’d be remiss if I didn’t say congratulations to Brett Russell and Owen Barnett with their first opportunities to play in games. Lorenz Currie as well. There’s a couple of first time guys. I apologize if I forgot anybody, but we played every healthy player on the roster tonight and it’s not often in college soccer that you can do that and keep the level high. I’m a proud coach right now.”

Up Next

Wake Forest will return to Spry Stadium for the last of its five-match home stand to open the season as it takes on Campbell on Tuesday night before it opens conference play on the road at North Carolina on Friday, Sept. 12.

The match against the Camels is slated for 6 p.m. and will stream live on ACCNX and will mark the fifth-ever meeting between the two programs with the Demon Deacons leading the series, 4-0-0.
