Wake Forest Falls to Michigan

Leading for the majority of the match, the No. 20 Wake Forest field hockey team fell 2-1 to No. 7 Michigan in the final seconds of Sunday’s match at Grant Field.
After a ball was played into the circle by junior Ava Moore and redirected by sophomore Lauren Storey, forward Lexi Causa scored the first goal of her Wake Forest career, sending the deflection into the left side of the cage to put the Demon Deacons on top early in the first quarter.
Making her first career start in goal, goalkeeper Ruby Butterfield recorded three saves.
A point of emphasis from Friday’s match, the Demon Deacons’ penalty corner defense answered the call, turning away seven chances by Michigan.
We lost this game based on our inability to play proactive defense on every line. There were moments of solid play; however, we need to be more consistent throughout every quarter. I’m gutted for the women, but I also understand that these experiences build character and a greater desire for a different outcome.” – head coach Jen Averill
