SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The calendar still says July, but the Wofford football team is already in mid-season mode. Summer workouts are in full swing, and the Terriers are building off a productive spring as they prepare for the 2025 season.

With a healthy mix of returning veterans and hungry newcomers, head coach Shawn Watson says this group is starting to find its identity.

“We’ve got a good vibe in the building,” Watson said earlier this month. “The effort’s been there, the attitude is right, and the competition level is where it needs to be.”

Quarterback Battle Highlights Offseason Work

One of the biggest storylines heading into fall camp is the quarterback competition. Transfers Jayden Whitaker and J.T. Fayard, along with freshman Ethan Drumm, have all taken meaningful reps this summer. So far, Watson is encouraged by their progress.

“They’ve been like sponges,” he said. “This offense isn’t simple, but all three have made big strides. I like where we’re headed.”

The staff isn’t naming a starter yet, but a leader is expected to emerge during early August scrimmages.

Offensive Line Sets the Tone

While the quarterback battle draws attention, the real strength of the team might be up front. Wofford returns several experienced offensive linemen—including Ben Marler, Quincy Hughes, and Tyler Atkins—who’ve helped anchor the summer sessions.

“That’s where everything starts,” Watson said. “Those guys set the standard for how we practice. They’re smart, physical, and they lead by example.”

Veterans Leading the Way

Six fifth-year players have taken on vocal leadership roles this summer, something Watson believes will make a difference when things get tough this fall. That group includes defensive linemen Maximus Pulley and Benny Radicia, as well as several offensive returners who know the grind of SoCon football.

“There’s no shortcut to winning,” Pulley said. “You’ve got to earn it now, so it shows up when it matters.”

What’s Next

Wofford will hold multiple scrimmages in August as part of fall camp. The coaching staff hopes to finalize key positions and build chemistry ahead of the season opener.

Until then, the focus remains simple: keep stacking good days.

“There’s still work to do,” Watson said, “but I like where we are right now. We’re building something solid.”

Quick Takeaways:

  • QB competition remains wide open heading into August.
  • Offensive line is shaping up to be a team strength.
  • Summer practices have brought intensity, leadership, and clarity.
